Cat has been sprayed.....??

Yesterday I was holding my cat and happened to take a whiff and boy, did she stink! She normally smells lovely and normal, especially after being outside, but her fur smells terrible.... I can only describe it as smelling a bit like wee....

She's so clean usually and it doesn't smell like cat wee at all. I wondered if she'd been sprayed by a fox or something along those lines? Do foxes even do that?

She's been so miserable since then, is there anything I can do to get rid of the smell.... cat shampoo maybe? She's grooming but the majority of the smell is at the top part of her neck, which she can't really reach.

I know it's hard without smell-o-net to diagnose.... but is there anything available that I can get which might help? Or might the smell disappear given time?

I would imagine that if she came across a fox, or any other animal like that, she wouldn't just run away so I can only think she's tried to protect herself and the other animal has sprayed her... she's fine, other than smelling really bad!

I hope someone can help!

Re: Cat has been sprayed.....??

And has she been spayed it could be a tom cat thats sprayed on her to leave his scent so others stay away?

No, foxes don't spray, but tom cats do!

Yeah a tom cat makes much more sense! lol

Anyone know of anything that might get rid of the smell? Will bathing in water do it or will I need some sort of shampoo?

I would use some cat shampoo, just to make sure she's thoroughly clean. You could also try a little bit of baby powder, we put a tiny bit on Effie's back near her tail recently; she'd had a bit of diarrhoea, and was getting a bit messy in her litter tray, so we wiped her down with a damp cloth and when she was dry rubbed a tiny bit of baby powder in her fur.

PS - my parents have a Jess and an Alfie! Jess is their cat and Alfie is their dog, a staffie :-D

Thanks very much for your help - and to everyone else as well!

Not looking forward to the teeth and claws once water is on the agenda, but anything's better than a smelly cat!

And yeah, apparently both Jess and Alfie are quite popular as pet names.... Jess was just a name me and my ex liked and Alfie was named after the Michael Caine film of the same name... because he looked like (and actually is) a bit of a scamp!

Our Jess was named after Postman Pat's cat - as she is black and white and fluffy...and I think my brother named the staffie after some footballer who played for his team Leeds Utd around the time when we got him. They're good names!
