Introducing cats to the outdoors

I have a friend who has two housecats who are about 1. Is it too late to introduce them to the outdoors and let them be outdoor cats? They are moving house from the city into a safer area and the cats are obviously bored. She's also pregnant and worried she may need to get rid of the cats. Are there ways round this?

Re: Introducing cats to the outdoors

They should be fine. As long as they have been in the house for more than 6 weeks, she can just open the door!

It's a bit of a tense time, but they seem to automatically know where they are. I usually sprinkle a bit of their litter around the garden to lay down a scent for them. Also do it early in the morning before breakfast. they will not want to stop out long if hungry.

It goes wihtout saying - Collar, neuter, injections and chip first though.
