Cat food spin off...

Hello!

This isn't to cause any arguing

Okay, so I'm confused about kitten foods. I accept whiskas is not the best, however, as someone pointed out in the other thread, it's not all about meat content. Iams wet food has a slightly higher meat content (25%) and all the vitamins (that experts think) they need. I'm not here to argue about meat content, at the end of the day if that's a problem, feed them actual meat. As veggie's we don't want to do that, and as cat food is formulated for cats, we are feeding them it.

Anyways, I don't see whiskas on the Pet Food Manufacturers Association website, which concerns me. So I'm looking into other kitten products. Natures menu doesn't seem to be on the list either...(which they hate anyway) And where's hi-life on there?

Iams seems to be good, I would feed them 80% wet food (and leave dry for them to nibble, as they don't seem to be huge fans anyway)

Any help?

Thanks

As obligate carnivores cats need meat, hence the % meat content is important. I am a veggie too, but my cats still get meat.

At the end of the day what you choose to feed your cats is up to you, but before you decide on IAMs, just google IAMs animal testing.

Re: Cat food spin off...

My cat is nursing and i have bought hilife.aplaws, science hill(probs all spelt wrong)royal canine all for kittens and she just licks off the gravy.

The only one she will for sure eat is felix as good as it looks kitten.

So i am spoiling her by giving cooked chicken breast and fish fillets(she does eat better than we do lol).

so i guess you just gotta feed your cat what she will eat rather than pay so much more for wasted food.

I am not saying no meat, I'm saying no fresh meat. Animals die regardless of meat content. I was just saying I will not be purchasing and cooking meat myself.

I will google it, however, I'm sure I find much of the companies the same (and no I'm not condoning it)

I was right, Hills do too!

Oh and only a very small number of well known pet foods have registered to PETA's non-animal tested food list!

Maybe try Food4-Cats!, Just Food for Cats Nothing More! then if your problem with it is the cooking of it and stuff. Food4cats sell raw meat that's pre-minced pre-balanced with all the right stuff and so on, so it's no more 'involved' than a tin of food. Only difference if you're squeemish is that it's more recognisably meat - tinned food often barely resembles it because it barely is it! My taster pack attiver today and I just scoop it out the bag (or tub, now I've decanted it all into tupperware) and dump it in the dish same as ordinary cat food. Very easy way to get your cat off crap commercial food with very little effort, and it's really cheap too much to my surprise.

Re: Cat food spin off...

Agreed, I have just weaned 6 kittens onto raw food, mainly minced but it's amazing to see a 5-week old kitten chomping on a raw chicken wing!

At least you know what is going into them with raw food, and it's actually not hard to make sure the balance is right with a very little research from others who do the same. Okay... so some of the meat may not be ethically sourced but then neither is 99% of what goes into processed commercial cat food.

25 years ago I was astonished to see the mother of my first Siamese kitten chewing through a haunch of raw rabbit! The owner's son would go out shooting just to bring home raw for them, and he told me he used to breed Golden Retrievers before he retired and they were all raw fed too. What surprised me 25 years ago is now becoming a very popular and healthy way of feeding cats & dogs.

Re: Cat food spin off...

Hello,

Ok, I'm ready for a beating so here goes...

I'm currently feeding Tilda and the kids on Whiskas...dum dum dum dum!!

I know, I know 4% meat blah blah blah. All the stuff they wouldnt naturally have in their diet blah blah blah.

I'm going to change over to a high meat content or raw as I have some holidays coming up and will have the time. I havent changed sooner due to work and Tilda having 6 kittens and trying to stop them from destroying my house and having it out with the RSPCA! The RSPCA and saving the house is still ongoing haha

I would really appreciate some info from you raw feeders out there...

What do you order from foods4cats for a first order example?

How much does it cost for that order?

How long does that order last?

Do you feed morning and night?

Any other info would be great too

Thanks peeps

xx

Re: Cat food spin off...

I remember as a child our cat was fed on katkins in a blue tin as that was basically all there was.

all our cats thrived on it.

isnt it strange how times change.

No need for a beating! I am having to introduce Whiskas, Felix and other foods into the diet of my kittens as: 1) Don't want them to grow up fussy... and fussy cats are made not born; and 2) can't expect every new owner to feed raw. This is one occasion where principles have to be cast to the wind for a short period!

Try your local pet shop - AMP Prize Choice frozen minced blocks or Forthglade raw are available in many places. I don't yet have a freezer big enough to handle a mail order, and will need a lot less anyway once the kittens have departed.
