Re: Need advice please introducing a new kitten
I think you should place the new kitten in a cage with your 7 month old cat together in the room. It's best that they familiarize themselves with each other, and from there you can see if they will get along or not, if they don't get along I believe just give it time and they will warm up to each other.

Re: Need advice please introducing a new kitten
When I introduced my kitten to my other cat, I just put the cage in one corner, and left him to it. Obviously I kept an eye on them, but they sniffed each other, she bopped him and that was about it.
I'd guess that all introductions don't work like that, but I don't really see the point in keeping them seperate, unless they're not getting on... but thats just my thoughts.. whether thats "right" or not I don't know ![]()

Re: Need advice please introducing a new kitten
Personally I don't beleive in caging cats/kittens. When I introduce a new member to the household I put the carrier that they come home in with the door open in a room where I can keep an eye and just let them all do things at their own pace. Shutting cats in a room together will only make more trouble as they can't get away from each other and have their own space. Theres always a bit of hissing, but we've never yet had any fighting. Good Luck, look forward to seeing some pics

Re: Need advice please introducing a new kitten
When we introduced a newbie kitten we placed the carrier in the room and let the cats sniff around the carrier until the attention died down a bit (not long!) and then let kittie out, he went straight into one of the cat beds in the room (his choice!) and the cats just hissed a bit and ignored him for a couple of days, then amazingly after a couple of days i found them playing together and ripping through the house chasing each other. Always difficult but give it a week and you wouldnt believe how friendly they can be with each other! My youngest cat was 7 months at the time we introduced the new kitten also.

Re: Need advice please introducing a new kitten
It depends on your cat to be honest.
My breeder recommends introducing them straight away - but i wouldnt suggest putting them in a cage together as they will both feel threatened. I would supervise them and let them walk around the house at will. Some people feel the need to let the cat settle in their own room or cage for a week before introducing but your original cat will smell the new cat on you anyway and will know something is different |

Re: Need advice please introducing a new kitten
When we introduced Jasper to Sushi I walked into the room where Sushi was and put Jasper on the floor and watched just to be on the safe side we didn't have any problems the pair were soon racing up my velvet curtains, which were absolutely ruined within a few days plain burgundy became see through stripes.
Jasper to Duke was done very slowly no cage just a strong hold of Duke and let them sniff each other for seconds at a time and kept them apart in different areas of the house. It was 12 months before I was confident to leave them together for any length of time. Duke and Sooty. I intend to put Sooty in a large dog crate that I purposely bought for when they are unsupervised. I can watch for re-actions before letting Sooty roam the room. I think they will be fine Sooty is used to dogs and Duke is used to a cat. Every situation is different and needs different types of handling. Sue |
