Re: House cats

i have just had 2 kittens and they are going to be house cats, as long as they got lots to keep them entertained and have space i dont see the harm, i have had 3 friends who have had kittens and within 6 months they have been killed by cars, so i am not going to take the risk, also they are pedergrees and I would hate them to be stolen. so im all for indoor cats as keeping family members safe is what family are about xx

Re: House cats

My cats all go out - they would be miserable indoors. I believe cats should have have access to the outdoors. One way for cats to be safe outside is to cat proof your garden. You can buy special kits, but it is also possible to DIY it.

We asked them about keeping a house cat, and we received a pretty curt response (email) basically telling us that cats need freedom and should not be kept inside unless they had a disability or condition which meant they needed an indoor lifestyle.

That's so strange. Around here, your adoption application at a shelter is likely be refused if you say you are going to let the cat go outside.

I couldn't bear the stress of not knowing where my cats are, I need to know they are safe and happy every minute of the day, inside.

When I took in a stray a couple years ago I had a few people give me these dire warnings that because she was used to being "free" she would not adapt to being a house cat. On the contrary, she showed no interest or desire to step out the door at all. Even when I took the others (harness trained) out into our little fenced yard, she did not, at first, have any interest in it.

She is now harness trained and comes out with the rest now (never unsupervised) but it took her a long time to trust it. And she shows no desire to go beyond the boundaries of the fence, and always comes in when I say it's time.

Re: House cats

it varies from shelter to shelter, some prefer the cats to go out, some prefer them to be indoor cats and some go on the individual cat also some wont let you have a cat if you have a child under 5 where as others will

Re: House cats

Both my cats are indoor and are very happy, I have a harness for them but Poppy hates the outside world so never goes out. It's weird I know dog's don't always have the same streetwise sense but i'd never let Kez out to wander the streets on her own so don't see why i'd do the same with my cats! I like knowing they are safe and secure with me

Re: House cats

My persian Kookai is 7 and has always been a house cat, she has never tried to escape and in the summer when I have the back door open she sits by it and occasionally sunbathes on the patio but doesn't venture any further. My main reason for keeping her in (apart from the fact she cost a fortune) is that we lived fairly close to a busy dual carriageway when I got her and I hated the thought of her getting out and getting hurt or even killed

She has a big scratching/climbing house thing that takes over my dining room lol and to be honest she has always been quite a lazy cat, quite happy to sit on the window sill or sprawl out by the patio doors in the sun.

I have seen so many friends of mine lose cats due to run ins with cars etc and I hate the thought of this happening to my baby.

We thought it was strange too, we thought that it the most important thing would be for someone to adopt and love a kitty...but I guess that was their policy so we couldn't argue.

As it turns out, our Effie is perfectly happy and safe so far.

Re: House cats

My cats are indoors and perfectly happy although they do have access to an outdoor run, am going to catproof the garden once we have bought a house this year hopefully!

Re: House cats

I Was Worried About Keeping My 2 Kittens As Indoor Cats As I Thought I Was Being Unfair, But Now I Have Them I Am Certainly Keeping Them As Indoor Cats, And So Far So Good!!! I Think Its An Individual Choice.
