So confused

I know it was only this morning when I lost Poppy and I am still grieving for her but I can't stop thinking about those kittens I saw this afternoon.

I have just spent the last hour sitting on the couch where Poppy normally sat and the whole place just feels soo empty, something is missing. I know I can never ever replace Poppy and I will always think about her but those two kittens deserve a good home dont they?

The kittens at the rescue home are 14 weeks old and a lot bigger than Poppy was (obviously) but also a lot sturdier in health if you get what I mean. They had been in isolation due to having a touch of cat flu when they brought them in and the female kitten had a tongue ulcer which is now healed fine.

I'm just scared that I am a bad kitty mummy and that what happened with Poppy was my fault and that I should have done so many things differently. I'm scared that the same thing would happen with other kittens in my care, but I know that if I let time pass it will just make my fears worse. Sort of jumping back on the wagon so to speak.

What would you do?

Re: So confused

So sorry you lost little Poppy but please dont blame yourself. If the so called professionals dont spot when things are wrong then you cannot expect to.

If it were me I dont think I would be making any decisions about getting other kittens from rescue centre at the moment. When I'm emotional I need time to think things through. There are always kittens needing good homes so waiting a while doesnt mean you wont end up with 2 lovely bundles of fun eventually.

Only you know what is best for you though ... so good luck whatever you decide xx

Re: So confused

I would have a good spring clean of the house...just incase any germs are lurking from Poppy's illness...then I'd go and get those kittens. It doesn't mean you thought any less of Poppy and your not a bad kitty mummy...you've just been very misfortunate and had a bad experience.

Go get em tiger!!! Those kitties deserve a good home and you deserve to be happy!

Re: So confused

Agreed, you can't blame yourself, the vets should have done their health checks properly.

I would say go for it, although they will never replace Poppy they will be good company for you and it sounds to me like they need someone to love them too.

Let us know what you decide

Re: So confused

When I lost my cat of 10 years, I came home and threw everything out that belonged to him, I was so upset. I knew I would replace him, but had no plans to do so quickly, however my children were so distraught, I went to the cat and dog shelter, and just a few days from losing him, we had a houseful ( a mother and 2 kittens) and it really helped the healing process (for us anyway). Smudge is in my heart forever, but my other cats are equally loved.

Re: So confused

I'd say go and get them. They won't replace Poppy but they will help to heal the pain and you will be head over heels in love with them in no time.

No way are you a bad kitty mum! Feelings like this are completely normal after a tragic event. It was not your fault. When our darling Twigs died I had similar feelings - "if only I'd noticed there was something wrong a day or two earlier". If only, if only ... although I knew I'd done the best for her that I could, it took quite a long time for these feelings to stop and for me to believe I really had done as much as I possibly could.

Don't let their previous illness worry you. Musky and Twigs were born feral. When they were trapped they had cat flu, were severely infested with fleas and malnourished. I was told they were lucky to be alive. But from such a bad start in life they ended up in a caring, loving home and were happy. Musky will have his tenth birthday at the end of October.

I'd jump back on that wagon and give the kittens a loving home. They will never replace Poppy in your heart, you will never forget her. But they will help you heal, in time.

And Phili just jumped onto my lap and miaowed at the computer screen. I think she wants you to jump back on that wagon too.

Re: So confused

After a long night we decided to adopt the two new kittens. The rescue home want to go and get them re-checked by the vets before they come home so I can pick them up next week at some point.

It does give me some time to clean everything and sort out extra feed bowls and bigger cat litter trays as they are a lot bigger than Poppy was

Re: So confused

I think you've made the right decision. We can never replace our loved ones but you can offer a loving home to two new kitties and they will help you to recover.
