Introducing a collar

I know most of you probably dont use collars, but if you do/know anything about doing so how would you introduce a collar to a kitten. I was planning on Ollie wearing a collar incase he were to be outdoors, also im having him microchipped on the 15th and they give you a blue tag to put on the existing collar so that under any circumstances necessary they know to scan him. Unfortunatly he tries to 'kill' the collar resulting in many back flips and rolls, I keep taking it off as soon as he shows discomfort as i dont want him to get stressed. I do have a kitten safety collar so if he does catch it, it immediatly releases to stop strangulation. Im not too sure how to go about this one

Re: Introducing a collar

I dont put a collar on Alfie, but he wears a harness sometimes for when I take him outside..

He did the same at first, I just put the harness on and left it on (but kept an eye on him) untill he settled. Then he got used to it..

a cat will react but they forget its there after a while. as long as its tight enough so he cant get a paw through but loose enough for comfort he'll be fine.

Re: Introducing a collar

I think you just need to be persistent im afraid, Nalaa walked backwards for about 2 days but she eventually forgot, although she has now won the battle since she's lost 3 already, ive gave up!

Re: Introducing a collar

Thanks im thinking at the moment of keeping him for an indoor cat, but just incase i wanted to have him introduced to the collar as i could always take it off if i decided to keep him in whereas the older he gets the more reluctant he may be to having one on if i decide to let him out. Thats my next step... The harness, I want to at first keep him on a harness and take him in the garden for a few months and hope that if i do let him out, with him only venturing to the garden... he may stay within the garden.

I guess ill just have to stick it on one day and hope he forgets about it

Re: Introducing a collar

hi

mine played hell when trying to get them to have a collar on - they did stop eventually and forget it was there - took a bit of bribing with treats!!!!!!!!! i also in end gave up though as we decided to keep ours as indoor cats in the end - i also agree a harness is great - when they stop acting like idiots and pretending that they cant walk when its on - you'll have this prob all over again when you try with a harness so just be persistant!!!!!

susie and the gang

You have to be persistant but Alfies slowly getting the hang of it.. he kept rolling over at first but now he's starting to walk round with me.

I only use it for when I take him round to my parents to go in the garden.. wouldn't want to take him for walks as such as you get too many dogs around that arn't on leads!

It's just so he can get some fresh air now and then!

Re: Introducing a collar

haha thanks susie Im glad everyone else has had the same reaction from their cats too its not just mine playing the 'look my legs have been disabled due to this collar' act.

I have a good few weeks to get him used to his collar, his injection isnt until the 15th....

Just been browsing, and noticed they do leads for cats just like a dogs? Are these any good as they attatch to the collar and so it wouldnt be anything new or are they just a money maker for pet stores.
