Re: Introducing a cat outised

Did you get a contract with your Bengal? If so.. doesn't it state that the cat has to be kept indoors? Please check before you let your cat out to play with cars.

It sounds to me like you didn't know what you were getting when you got a Bengal. Get him some company so that he has someone to bounce around with.

Letting him outside is the cat owners equivalent of putting a child in front of the telly as a babysitter. Sure - he'll love it, that is until he's dead. If you think he's going to stay in the cul de sac and not head up to the nearest main road then you're mistaken.

Brits have this crazy idea that it's not 'fair' to keep the cat inside. Would you let a dog out to roam? If not, why not?

Re: Introducing a cat outised

We microchip all of our kittens for peace of mind. But apparently vets aren't obliged to sweep for chip numbers when a new cat comes into their surgery. Seems a bit of a waste of time to me.

I just noticed that you said that he's insured. Argh! Why does this make it ok to let him out on the road? It lightens your vet bills, but it doesn't lessen the pain or bring him back to life if he is involved in an RTA.

Excellent points SavannahKitten-this is a great example of people thinking of getting a breed cat-to do their homework on chosen breed thoroughly

Totally agree, my Alfie sometimes bounces off the walls and has mad moments and would probably love to go and explore outside to use some energy.. but I just start playing with his toys with him when he's like that and then he's fine!

I'm also training him to walk on a leash so I can take him outside for some fresh air.

I would NEVER let Alfie out, you can get a cat micro chipped but it doesn't work as a tracking device!

If you're still going to let your Bengal out then I wouldn't expect to have him as a pet for long.

rupa is on a distinguished road
Re: Introducing a cat outised

thanks, i really do appreciate your comments. we did research the breed thoroughly and even spoke to several breeders. We looked at 5 different litters before selecting Rupa and each of the owners let the parents wander outside at will- we really had no indication that Bengals should not be let outside!

i like the idea of getting another cat for him to play with. even if its not another Bengal.

Given his personality do you think there will be any problems with intoducing another cat?

I know plenty of people who have bengals in a multi-cat household

Re: Introducing a cat outised

The breeders allow their unneutered Bengals free rein?
These don't sound like registered breeders to me.
Bengal studs can cost a couple of thousand pounds and queens can cost between a thousand and two thousand pounds. It doesn't makes sense that someone would pay that sort of money then allow the stud out to contract FIV, or fertilise the local moggy with his pedigree sperm. Same with the queen - why would the queen be allowed to wander free to be impregnated by other boys, possibly carrying diseases?

Anyway.. I don't see why there would be a problem introducing another cat, as long as the new cat has a similar personality. For example if you get a sleepy Persian that Persian is going to get most irate at your Bengal's ADHD personality and the problem will be made worse, not better.
