How far do they go?

We reserved a lovely girl from the rescue centre at the weekend and were just waiting for her to be spayed before we could go and collect her.

So anyway I got a call from the rescue centre today, they were a bit concerned about us taking her because she was brought into them as a stray and apparently was picked up only about a mile from where we live. They have told me to have a think about it and get back to them tomorrow.

I didn't plan on having her as an indoor cat as Aber is already allowed out and I like having the doors/windows open. What I was wondering really is what are the chances of her wandering far enough to find her old home? I know Aber dosn't go very far at all but if she was picked up as a stray then she likely has wandering tendencies. Also a bit concerned because if her old owners do live around here then it's likely they might see her and take her back home.

I'm not really sure what to do now, she is the perfect kitty for us but I don't want to get her if we're just going to loose her again.

What would you do?

Re: How far do they go?

I work at a rehoming centre and it's one of the things we have to look at when letting people adopt cats. In my opinion (and it's just my opinion) it's a little too close for comfort given that she was a stray and noone knows what direction she came from initially. But then you have to factor in age and how long she was a stray for.

Re: How far do they go?

She's only 1 but I don't know how long she was at the centre for. She had just been transferred from the kitten unit.

I'm a bit miffed they didn't say anything on Saturday when we went in because at least we could have continued looking and not got our hopes up.

Re: How far do they go?

Yea i'd hate to turn her down just because of that. For all I know she could have just been abandoned in the area.

I think as long as we keep her in for the full 4 weeks she will hopefully know where home is. I couldn't bare to loose another cat though if she did run away.

think i'll ring the rescue place this morning and see what they think.

Fingers crossed everything goes well I'm glad you decided to get her she should be fine after keeping her confined for a while.

Re: How far do they go?

I'm just a bit worried in case she wanders far enough to be in familiar surroundings and doesn't come back, has anyone ever had this happen? Obviously she would be microchipped with our details but if she went back to her old owners (if she had any!) then they might just keep her.

I'm torn! I really want her but that includes not wanting to loose her!

Re: How far do they go?

I dont have experience of this but maybe if you kept her indoors for as long as you can so that she knows this is her new home it should be ok. Hopefully someone else can help you more!

Re: How far do they go?

Thanks for your help Just wanted a few opinions.

My friend made a good point, if we feed her on as good food as Aber gets then she won't be going anywhere lol He's not a cat person and doesn't understand buying luxury food for them whilst we starve
