Re: How far do they go?

Update

Ok so the shelter just called, I've said yes we'll have her Their biggest concern was also her old owner (if she had one) spotting her and taking her home, but she'll only be out when we're at home so i'll be able to keep an eye on her.

She is being spayed today so we are going to pick her up on Sunday

Very good result and very good luck, I'm sure after keeping her in for a length of time she will only associate you as home.

Re: How far do they go?

I would keep her in for at least 2 weeks, even a month if you can cope, until you feel she has definitely bonded with you, even if she is friendly right away.
I don't know how you stand legally if her old owners did claim her back, but I would have thought you probably would have to give her to them, if they can prove it is their cat. If she is being spayed then she may be more home orientated and not stray any more.

I know of a cat that had to be rehomed to a different city as it kept just going back to its old owners home (they had gone abroad), no matter where he was rehomed to in the same city.

Re: How far do they go?

Aww well I hope she's not going to do that. She obviously couldn't find home the first time round

Being spayed should rein her in a little, and also i'm hoping she'll stick with Aber, he dosn't go far at all. We're quite lucky here as there's no road by our house and lots of trees and bushes and even a stream, lots of cats here

I will be keeping her in for 4 weeks at least. It's the recommended time from the shelter and pretty much stuck with that for both the boys.

I'm so excited Can't wait to pick her up

Rehoming centres have to give the owners at least seven days to come forward, if they don't then it's the owners loss.

That's good to know. My only worry is if they see her and take her but i'll be keeping a close eye on her

Re: How far do they go?

You can always chip her - sort of proof that you have ownership

May be a good idea anyway in case anything happens to her

They chip them when they arrive at the shelter and are registered to them until they leave when they fill in the forms for the new owner. So i'll get a confirmation in the post within 2 weeks and if anything happens to her during that time (I won't let this happen ) she'll be traced to the shelter. Good system really

Re: How far do they go?

The chances of the old owner wanting her back are slim if they never made phone calls to the local cat shelters to enquire if anybody had found their cat - wouldnt that be the first thing you would do if you lost your cat?
If she wasnt chipped, and wasnt asked for, dont worry yourself
What colouring is she? If shes not 'unique' colouring she probably also wouldnt be recognised by owners that had given her up as lost, and as she's only 1 she will also have grown so much since they saw her she'll have changed alot.

And thats all hypothetical considering she might not even have an owner!

Enjoy her, spoil her rotten it sounds like she deserves it!
