Best place to get kittens?

I am still feeling very sad and raw from the loss of fluffy, but my son and I would really like to get another cat asap as the house just doesn't feel the same without a little animal to welcome you and pester you for food!

I could wait for my brother in law's girlfriend's cat to have her kittens, but am a bit concerned that she has not been well looked after - she has not been given any jabs etc, and don't know whether the kittens will arrive safely or be healthy etc etc. Plus then we'll have to wait at least 8 weeks or so till we could bring them home.

Other people have suggested getting some from a rescue centre as apparently there are lots of kittens needing homes at the moment.

I think I'd like to get 2 this time, maybe a boy & a girl (to be neutered obviously) or 2 girls. I've also been advised not to buy moggies as there are so many in need of homes it would be better to rehome from a rescue centre or individual who just needs a good home for their kittens.

What would your advice be on obtaining kittens? What's the best option and what should I look for when choosing?

Re: Best place to get kittens?

Clean and clear eyes, clean bums, bright & alert. It's a great idea to get rescue cats/kittens - I've got 3. There are often cats who need to be homed in pairs if you're not set on a kitten - owners have gone into care, abroad etc. Having two (or more) is good so that they can keep each other company too, especially if they're going to be indoor cats. Really sorry about the loss of Fluffy x

I agree with Munchbunch but you could also consider rehoming a pedigree. Most breed clubs have rehoming sections. Just a thought.

Re: Best place to get kittens?

So glad you have decided on 2, they will love playing with each other!

It's entirely up to you just remember that rescues will probably insist on a homecheck etc as sometimes that puts people off.

Re: Best place to get kittens?

Yeah I have read about the home check - not too worried about that (though would have to tidy up a bit and maybe mend the fence!) The only thing is some say they won't let you have young kittens if you work FT. We do, although I have a study day so am at home 3 days, plus my son would be home from school earlier than us, not sure what they'd think.

Found out that Fluffy's Mum is pregnant as well as his sister (irresponsible people not having their cats neutered!) so may well have 2 of the kittens from those litters after all!

Re: Best place to get kittens?

Sorry to read of the loss of dear Fluffy. Glad to see that you're being so responsible and caring - have you enquired whether your brother in law's girlfriend might let you have Fluffy's sister or mother plus a kitten perhaps? That way you'd be sure to get her spayed and she'd be safe with you. Anyway, its your call.

If you are looking to bring kittens or cats into your home, check their health as Munchbunch has suggested and ask about their veterinary care and whether there are any certificates to confirm vaccinations etc. If they are not old enough for those, then give them a good physical inspection - check to see that their coats are free of flea droppings/fleas, scabs etc. Ask about their appetites - you want a fur-child with a good appetite whom you do not have to struggle to feed and if possible, one who does not have a long list of allergies.

Re: Best place to get kittens?

I rescued all 3 of my girls and was lucky enough to get 3 torties all different hair lengths and all rescued at different times! I'd definately say its the way to go, £50 donation towards a charity rather than a BYB and they usually have at least their first vaccination, sometimes are even microchipped depending on where you go.

Re: Best place to get kittens?

Depending on what you want really!

If a purebreed, then from a good breeder who really cares for her cats, and has done all the relevent health checks and registered the kittens etc etc etc

or

if moggie......... rescue is definatly the way to go.

Have you thought about a mother/kitten pairing? many many mum cats end up in rescue for a long long time, while their kittens have been homed long ago...

just a thought!
