Advice needed RE stray tom!

Long story short:
We have taken on a little stray un-neuterd tomcat about 6 weeks ago. We have tried as hard as we can to find the owner but with no luck. He now needs an opperation to remove his eye as it is badly infected (the vet said they will snip him at the same time!) I am very worried about the surgery reason being:

He comes into our house at 8.30 - 9 each night, sleeps through and then leaves the next morning after breakfast and comes back again about 8.30 - 9 and settles in for the night again.

But he never comes home wet! I know that sounds daft but we have 2 other cats who go out and always come home wet on soggy summer days.

I'm worried in case the little tom has found himself a daytime home or has worked his way back to his original home and sleeps there during the daytime and returns to us when he is booted out at night. I dont want any other owners having a shock when he turns up with only one eye (and missing his tackle!).

Any advice here? Does it sound like we're his second home or is he just out 'tomming' during the day!

p.s. When he first arrived we had to make sure he went out after breakfast each day because he had an accident on our hall carpet so could this explain his routine?

Re: Advice needed RE stray tom!

i have a stray that lives in my garden and he is always clean and only ever soggy and wet if it has been pouring down but he is generally dry (my front garden where he lives is tiny so i see him all day every day almost) not sure if its just a stray thing but he is quite good at keeping himself clean and dry

Re: Advice needed RE stray tom!

Does he have a collar?
We had a cat sleeping in our back garden for over a year.
When our Lurcher passed away, the cat came into the house just a couple of days later.
We saw that it was wearing a collar with a plastic barrel, so we popped a little note inside, asking "Is this your cat? It's sleeping in our garden and has now come into our house."
Next day came the reply "His name is Tiger and he lives at #13."
So I sent a message back - "Hello K and K - it's S at #2 here!"
Anyway, long story sideways - we knew she wasn't keen on being at her real home, so when we moved, we asked if we could have her - "Yep, alright"
Turns out, HER name was Tiggy!
Edited to add : I would think, if he has a home with owners, they would be aware of the condition of his eye.

Re: Advice needed RE stray tom!

No, no sign of a collar.

When he first arrived he followed one of our cats into our enclosed garden and in through the cat flap, found him sat in the lounge one morning! We took him to the vet a few days after this to be scanned but he has no microchip and he was in a poor condition covered in fleas and lice, the vet said it was a sure sign he'd been alone for a long time (she actually took a sample of them to show the nurses what they looked like because they are so rare nowdays!)

My husband tells me not to worry and said the same as Faerie Queene that if he has owners they would have been aware of the lice and the eye and had them sorted.

Good for you taking care of this poor cat. If it has no chip and is not neutered and, especially as it obviously has not been cared for, then in my book it is a stray. I would proceed on that basis.

Re: Advice needed RE stray tom!

I took in a stray tomcat early this year at christmas. He used to live in a cardboard box beside are new house. We moved in in september and just after christmas he followed my mom around one night and she was worried she would accidently hit him coming out of the drive. So she brought him inside and hes been here ever since.

I tried to find the owners but no one replied about him. Hes being fixed next week and will be micro chipped at the same time. He has a habit of bolting for the door when it opens.

But he such a lovely gentlemen even with his issues. If he gets to know u and trust u hell come when u call him like a dog, he loves playing with my other cats, and loves to snuggle up on my lap when im playing games on the computer and watches intently.

I wouldnt give him up for the world

Re: Advice needed RE stray tom!

Have spoken to my other half about doing that but i dont really want to put any unescessary stress on him or cause him to bolt.

He is a very loving little thing but can be very nervous.

If you raise your hand to scratch your nose or rub your eye when you're in his line of vision he cowers as if he thinks you're going to hurt him so i dont think he'd be very impressed at the prospect of being choked by a collar.

Might pester hubby again and see what he thinks!
