Re: Absolutely devastated :-(

Do get another, it's good for the kids. We had a kitten about the same age as yours that got run over a couple of weeks ago, the local mad cat woman told my 12 year old son, quite callously, that he'd been hit, and dragged himself into her garden to die painfully, and then she buried him. I was horrified, and of course my son was beside himself.

I think having pets, and having to deal with them dying is really important for kids, it's a way of letting them learn about death and grieving.

We were never allowed pets when I was a kid and I'm ridiculous when any pet dies, my kids deal with it so much better than I do.

Re: Absolutely devastated :-(

Yeah I agree, I think it has been a learning experience - esp for my 11 yr old. He was in such a state this morning, but the burial really helped. Then we took them bowling & swimming to cheer them up. He is still upset but much more philosophical about it - we've talked about how happy Fluffy was when he was alive, what great care he took of him etc etc. Now he's just thinking about getting another cat - even if it's not as good as Fluffy!

Re: Absolutely devastated :-(

Reading this has brought tears to my eyes as its exactly what happened to my cat Tommy... I think he was less than 2 years old when he was run over and I was sooo upset

We used to get Tommy in at night but one night he didn't come in and we thought he'd be ok and didn't call him any more, but he never came back...

I think I was around 11 when he died, he got run over a few months before we moved house and we wouldn't have been able to take him with us so it seemed like he wasn't meant to be with another family

We have another cat now, Alfie, and we do the same thing of calling him in every night, once I went out at 2:00 in the morning looking for him as I was so worried the same thing would happen to him

Re: Absolutely devastated :-(

So sorry for your loss.

Maybe it would help you and your kids if you made a scrap book about Fluffy. Stick pictures of him in there and write a favourite memory of him in it etc. It might help them open up about him.

Re: Absolutely devastated :-(

I am so sorry to hear you have lost your cat rip fluffy

When I was little we had ginea pigs and when they died my mum got us to draw a picture of them and everything they liked and write happy memories we had of them and she put it in a special place so they could reaad it and know how much we loved them.

When my little sisters(she was 8) rabbit died she wrote Luna a letter thanking her for being part of her life and giving her so many happy memories.

xx
