how long do you leave your kitten alone?

We got our new kitten (8 weeks) Sat afternoon. "His" room is my bedroom and I spent the first 24 hrs in there with him except for very short bursts of time. Then yesterday I was in there most of the day except when the door was open and I was supervising him in the rest of the house. He is in there alone now with the door shut and has been for around 30 mins. I have 2 other cats and they are still getting used to each other and I wanted them to have some time in the house without stressing over him. But I'm worried about him alone though he is very comfortable in my room. Also I dont know if cats can get attachment issues like dogs where you NEED to leave them alone sometimes so they get used to it. So what is best for Dewey (my kitten)

Re: how long do you leave your kitten alone?

i have no experience of this, but i think cats jst go with the flow once they are settled. some days sheldon is left for 6 hours some days 2 hours and some days like bank holidays it cud be 8 hours. and everytime i come home i get the reaction from a rudley awoken cat he he. if im out for a long period i make sure he's fed and watered b4 i go and then he shud be fine. i also put th radio on if im gonna be long.

good luck im sure someone willl be along soon with more experience

I think it should be ok for to introduce the others to him and this will give him company. They probably know he is in the room anyway.... it will take a little while for them all to get used to each other. Kittens will call for you if they are left on their own but it's usually when you just go out the room. they usually then find a nice spot to curl up on.

Good luck and hope it all goes well for dewey

they have been introduced and are together many hours a day now but my older two have not accepted yet but I know its early days. We did it wrong you see we should have had kitten in a cage and let the cats meet him that way but we just introduced his smell, kept him in my room then let them meet sometimes under supervision.

Re: how long do you leave your kitten alone?

i had this trouble a few weeks ago. i brought a 6 week old kitten home, i already have a 6 month old ktten, i introduced them straight away..(probably not recommended) but anyhow it took a few days for them to get used to each other, mia my 6 month old kitten, growled and hissed and pounced on poppy for the first couple of days..i thought it would never stop and i thought i was going to have to return poppy to the original owners..but now they are like 2 best friends, tho poppy gets on mias nerves by chasing her around the room, mias gettin older now and just likes to sleep more, and doesnt seem bothered by poppy anymore. when i got my first got mia, i would constantly worry about her being at home on her own, but as long as the windows not wide open, no electrical cables to chew or any other dangerous hazards, and just toys to play with your kitten should be fine! and as for introducing the other cats to your new kitten, before you know it dewey will be bossing them about!

Re: how long do you leave your kitten alone?

ps: maybe get like and old towel or blanket which dewey has been sleeping on and gradually introduce the scent from the blanket to your cats..that way the cats will then get used to the new scent and probably accept the kitten more quickly! worth a try!

Re: how long do you leave your kitten alone?

thanks! Dewey is out of my room most of the day now, unless I leave the house as I dont trust him out on his own yet. He is really hopeless, I dont know if it is because he is deaf or something else but he needs a lot of looking after. I keep him in my room overnight too. My boy cat Yang has pretty much accepted him but my girl Yin truly hates him. However she only hates him marginally more than she hates Yang and they were litter mates and have lived together 10 years so I am not sure that is saying too much! Anyway Dewey cant hear her hissing at him & I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not!
