Confused puss!

On Saturday we bring our new puppy home and looking forward to introducing him to our cats.

Melody is a complete nut case bless her, and is ALWAYS finding trouble. My avator was taken when she climbed into our recycling sack!

Just wondered if anyone has cats and dogs, and if so, how did their introductions go

Re: Confused puss!

A few years ago when we took on a 10yr old lab our cats weren't used to dogs although the dog was used to cats. We just gave them time to get used to each other and they all became great friends sleeping on the same bed. Only problem was when we used to walk the dog before we went to bed the 4 cats would come with us, we looked like a right bunch of nutters!

Hello Nina-can't offer any advice-but good luck and as already said just take things slowly-with cats-we keep them separate for a few hrs/days and allow them to taste ,smell at their own pace and/or swap blankets so they can familiarise themselves with each other-i'm sure they'll be causing havoc together in no time at all and be tag teaming on new and various ways of how to drive you mental

Re: Confused puss!

As you know we've got two cats and we board dogs. Nearly every person that walks in with their dogs says "ooo I don't know what they're like with cats". Our answer everytime, whatever the breed of dog, is just let them off the lead and see. Never ever had a dog that wants to hurt a cat. They might scare them if they get over excited but thats about it.

With our pups we didn't even really think about it. It will only be a problem if you make it a problem as with anything with dogs.

I wouldn't anticipate a problem, I would just bring the pup home and just see what happens naturally, messing about with slow introductions is a waste of time in my opinion, at the end of the day the cats going to be the boss, once your pup realises the cat doesn't want to play with him he'll leave it well alone.

Can we see a bigger pic of your kit Nina?

Re: Confused puss!

I had 3 cats when I moved in with my partner who had a german shepherd.
The cats were not impressed at first and did get the hump for a few weeks but now they are all fine! They dont sleep in beds together but they are able to live in harmony! (sometimes the cat will smack the dog across the snout if he sniffs her bum)

Re: Confused puss!

That was my intention to be honest Alan, so thanks for that advise.

I have a lot of respect for Cesar Milan (in the minority here ) and was fascinated to see the way he introduced a cat to a dog recently. It made perfect sense not to keep them apart, since how will they ever get the opportunity to get along when in isolation.

Melody is such a little madam however, that I would not be at all surprised if she started bullying the puppy

Re: Confused puss!

When I brought my dog into the house I already had 4 cats one of whom didn't like dogs very much. Apart from a little trouble at the beginning when the cat would scratch the dog when she was going in and out I've had no problems, the cat was stopped from getting the dog via a little water pistol.
When UI was a kid we had 4 cats and 5 dogs and they all got along fine.

No problem, theres far too much fuss made about cats and dogs in my opinion. Thousands of people own both with no problem.

So wheres this bigger pic of your kitten?
