Re: cat collars
all of my cats have worn collars, pretty sure my sis's cats wore them too, none of them have ever managed to garrot themselves with them, our house, neighbour is surrounded by bushes, trees and other assorted foliage. sis's lived out in the sticks so many many things to be caught on, no problems at all.
we did use quick release ones for a while but they tend to come off when they have a good old scratch so we use normal fastners now. Our cat flap works by a magnet on their collars so they couldn't get in if they didn't have them on. did have a normal cat flap for a while but as there are loads of cats in our area and 2 had already been in our house while we were out, we changed to the magnet one (chip one is faar to expensive). they also both have a wee address barrell on them. we keep meaning to get them chipped but never really get round to it. also most of the neighbours know our miscreant cats on sight.

Re: cat collars
Ive just put a collar, quik release one, on Buster, even though he is chipped, I thought as he is going out now that it would be better as it looks like he belongs to someone. Im worried about him getting bald round his neck though, and its driving him nuts, have taken the bell off and he seems a bit happier, its really loose so will just see how he goes for a few days.

Re: cat collars
I got a quick-release collar for my kitty. Even though she is microchipped and will be mostly an indoor cat, I was worried that if she got out someone might mistake her for a stray.
The quick-release mechanism certainly works because I keep finding her collar in random spots around the house It looks so pretty as it's the same shade of pink as the tips of her ears. |

Re: cat collars
I've got a comment re many of the people here saying how a lot of people wouldn't bother checking a stray/lost cat for microchipped, and I must disagree. Most people who care enough to buy a cat some food and give them some would at least have some knoledge and check the cat for chipping. My vet checked over my new cat, wormed her and it only cost £7.50. A good deal if you as me, and because we checked her, we can now call her ours. Plus I could never live with the guilt of not knowing if she didn't belong to anyone else, she really is a fab cat!

One of the reasons I don't let my cat out is that I am scared someone would just pick her up and take her home with them. I am planning on moving somewhere nicer as soon as the housing market allows. |

Re: cat collars
What's the deal with this? My cat is a rescue cat and when we got him, he was bald around where his collar sits. I assumed that it was because the previous owners had had his collar on too tight (I'd never seen/heard of a cat going bald around the collar before) so I made sure the collar I put on him wasn't too tight. But then I read somewhere that said that the chemicals in the collars can sometimes cause the fur to fall out. The strange thing is that since getting him just over a year ago he's worn a flea collar and the fur is very slowly growing back (shame he's going bald in other places, but that's a completely different matter!!

Re: cat collars
My two indoor cats don't wear collars but are microchipped.
My outdoor cat is chipped too and wears a safety collar from here: Kitty Collars: Safe Cat Collars UK - Cat Safety Collars UK |
