the vets i use tend to chip cats when they neuter/spay them too

That was a strange vet! Most would be only too happy to chip a cat (or dog) and charge a silly price
Anyone can learn to implant chips these days, I did a training course 5 years ago and chip all my kittens before they go to new homes.
