Help with new kitten!!!

We picked up our new kitten friday night. She is adorable. We think she is just 6 wks old and were told weaned and trained to use litter tray. I bought the same food that she has been having but she barely touched it. (Pouches for kittens and some dry food) She hasnt drunk any water either. She is one of a litter of 5.

So, I gave her some milk which she has lapped up. the vet advised to perhaps heat the food a bit to increase the smell but that didnt work. the vet also suggested to try a bit of tuna. She was clearly hungy this morning and totally ignored the pouch food but when offered tuna, scoffed it down plus a tiny bit of the dry food.

Obviously I am glad shes eaten properly bit I dont want to end up with a fusspot either. I want her to eat the pouches!! Any suggestions or ideas to help me please?

Thank you

(BTW..she is litter trained for sure!!)

Re: Help with new kitten!!!

Being taken away from Mum and siblings is a terrible wrench, and they need time to adjust. Its good that she is eating anything and using her tray. 6 weeks seems very young, but then I breed pedigree cats and those leave home around 14 weeks. Even at that age, it can take some of them a week to settle.

I would give her anything she likes just to keep her eating. Then try taking whatever is her favourite, and mix in a little of what you want her to eat. Then over time gradually increase the amount. Tuna is fine as the odd meal, but its not good as a permanent food anyway. Have you tried tempting her with anything else - cooked chicken? That said don't try her with too many new foods too quickly as that could upset her tum.

She sounds like a typical girl They love to test you and make sure you are the right owners for them.

Hello Minouche and welcomeI agree with Saikou-once she gets going with her food introduce new food slowly and try not to give her milk too often(it could give her the trotts) Give her time as it's only Sunday-you'll find her ruling the roost soon enough

Re: Help with new kitten!!!

Thanks for your advice. I apreciate what you say about laying off the milk. She did take a few laps of water this morning.

I guess if shes hungry enough she'll eat? I will definately try mixing a bit of tuna in with the pouch stuff and the gocat dry.

New to this and a worried mum!! Its like having a new baby this malarkey!!!

Re: Help with new kitten!!!

Hi might be worth trying her on royal canin babycat, its a really good food for tinies, and smells xtra good!good for fussy feeders,it has very good nutritional value, and miles better for her than supermarket brands.Brands like go cat, whiskers etc tend to be mainly cereal based, where royal canin contains higher meat values. As she`s quite tiny it is worth considering!

I agree with this post, tons of nutritional value in rc babycat, just the thing your lickle one needs to give an all round boost

Re: Help with new kitten!!!

Thanks. The royal canin is now on my shopping list!

I mixed the Tuna in with the felix pouch stuff and she ate it. Will now decrease the amount of tuna each time.

Now to get her to drink

Shes been to the vets this morning to be wormed and checked over. Shes doing well...vet said not to worry about drinking. Just put a bit of water in with her her food for hydration. (Cats notorius for not drinking)
