Do anyone of you own dogs and cats?

I have 2 border terriers, 8 & 10mths old. We have an 8 week old kitten who they just keep barking at when they see her (they are only on a lead when we introduced them). I just know they will go for the poor thing if we let them off the lead and kill it. I coudn't imagine taking them off their lead near the kitten to be honest.

Will it always be like this? how on earth do you introduce them? or is it better I always keep them apart because they are terriers?

Re: Do anyone of you own dogs and cats?

Hi,
I have a german shepherd who keeps a very beady eye on my 2 girls and I would never leave them alone together just in case
I get round it with the use of stair gates (also handy with an increasingly mobile daughter lol) so the cats can always get away and I keep the lounge as neutral grounds with the cats having the front hall and upstairs as their main area and the dogs (our staffie doesnt care at all ) get the rest

When I first brought them home I let Tess have a sniff whilst they were in their boxes and now I give her a treat when ever she ignores them. I try not to tell her off if she pays too much interest in case she starts to assosiate them with it and then resents them.

I used to have a border x lakeland who was mostly great with my old cat charlie (just a bit too rough when playing sometimes) but then charlie was there first and was much bigger than woody when he was a pup He hated other cats tho

Didnt you just get your kitten? I guess it will take time for all to adjust but your dogs are still just pups so fingers crossed they will all get on! How are they around your smaller family members?

Sorry, thats all I can say xxx

Hi
I have a British Bulldog and 3 cats my bulldog just gives them a sniff and wanders off the cats are not bothered by him , a couple of times my ragdoll Alfie has gone in the garden and they have been chaseing each other but Alfie is always quicker and wiser, my 2 persians tease him threw the glass patio doors he barks and waggs his tail wanting to play.

Re: Do anyone of you own dogs and cats?

Thanks.

The dogs are fine with the kids, they are very excitable so only really have the run of the end of the house, not the living room or kids playroom downstairs. They also have their own section of the garden. I hope they calm down as they get abit older

I shall use a stair gate and try it that way once the kitten is abit older, I am just worried about how they will get on in the future.

Re: Do anyone of you own dogs and cats?

Hi there,

My old cat (Who sadly went missing last year ) lived for many years with our Border collie and border collie X.

We had the advantage of having our cat first and getting our dogs from puppies; so the dogs learnt to live with our cat. If the puppies ever tried to play fight too hard then my cat would just smack them lol! It sure put them in their place and stopped them from bullying him when they were older.

In your case, I would guess that they will grow out of this behaviour when they realise the kitten isn't going any where lol.

Stacey xxx

Re: Do anyone of you own dogs and cats?

I have 4 cats, Tilly the cav and Jinja my sons dog. They all get on fine.
Tilly had a few tellings off by the cats when she stuck her nose where it was not wanted but they will lie together now.

Borders together can be a nightmare. I would introduce the kitten to each individually and have hold of the collar at first to let them sniff. When they look away offer them a treat and praise them.
Dogs don't usually mean to harm a little one and should realise that it is a baby.

Re: Do anyone of you own dogs and cats?

Hi
I have 3 Dobermanns and now 2 siamese kittens , I made the spare room as the kittens place putting a baby gate there with a board so they could not get out and the dogs could not get in giving the kits time to settle in they knew the dogs were there and the dogs knew about the kits , I went and spent time with the kits every couple of hours, after a few days I took the board away and the kittens were free to come and go as they please with the safety of the gate/room to run too.The kittens started to come down stairs
Now 3 weeks later all are best friends .
I was only ever worried about one of mine but even she has come good she cleans them .
But border terriers are a working dog bred for ratting so they might be in prey drive all the time .

Re: Do anyone of you own dogs and cats?

I have 10 dogs and a Kitten. What I did was I kept the kitten away from the dogs (only just let them see her now and again). When she was older thats when I let her wander around them. Never had a problem unless she ran and thats when the dogs wanted to chase.
The Kitten stood up for herself though and the dogs just turned and walked away. She also comes into room now with dogs and sleeps

Re: Do anyone of you own dogs and cats?

Depends on the dog, sadly!

Mine has practically no prey drive so sees the cat as a pal. I knew before I got the kitten how she would act & was right! After bringing home the kitten, my dog sniffer her bum A LOT which annoyed the kitten but that was it.

I'd separate them, teach the dogs to watch you whilst the kitten is out & watch them very closely if you do not feel safe with them. Perhaps confine the kitten in a carrier for a while every day so they are used to her smells and can't get at her.
