Re: Some bad news : (

Poor Sweep

We've had a kitten with a heart murmur in the past, the new owner was worried at first and we had long conversations with her and the vet. There are no guarantees but he has grown up to be a really lovely and active cat, he is now around 18 months old with no sign of illness.

Of course it really depends on how bad the murmur is but often when they're born with these things it can clear up over time.

Best of luck and I hope Sweep has as good an outcome as our kitten.

Fiona

Re: Some bad news : (

Please don't take this too serious, lots of kittens this age have them it's because the kitten is growing fast and everything else can't keep up,you should ask what grade it is and they have usually gone by th 2nd vac any way,I have Maine Coons and several of them had grade 1 & 2 heart murmers at this age and older, they are fine now.

Murmurs can appear in young kittens that are evident at 1st vaccinations and have disappeared by their 2nd. Some heart murmurs can also disappear before they are a year old.

My Pops had a murmur from birth, although the breeders vet did not pick it up. She was the biggest in the litter and you would never know to look at her. She sadly only lived until she was 6 1/2 when she had a heart attack, but in those too few years, she was never ill, never had her quality of life compromised in anyway. She never showed any outward signs of having a heart problem at all, infact she was the only cat to leap from the scratcher to the arm of the sofa which was 6ft away.

Although Pops died young, I have also read a number of reports from owners who have been told what you have and their cat has lived well into their teens, so there is hope.
Thank you xx
