How Many Cats is/are TOO MANY?

Hi,

I have 1 house-cat and another cat who goes out sometimes, generally when it is sunny which is not a lot of the time. She's fine, she takes kittens etc in her stride, just hisses at them and hide upstairs.

I also have Misty and at the moment her 5 kittens. 4 who are leaving in July.

One kitten in particular keeps coming to me meowing and doing cute things like standing on his back legs and begging! He does not have a new home to go to as yet, although I have had 3 enquiries about him, I still have not let him go.

He is exactly the same markings are Misty, so I don't really have an excuse to keep him. Except he is very very sweet and cute.

Do you think I am being very silly even entertaining the idea of keeping him? He is unregistered so just a ragdoll-moggy really.

Then there is the fact that I still am looking into buying a breeding female, so that's another cat, August/September time.

I keep thinking it would be nice for Noodle (seal mitted kitten) and New queen to play around together but I think I am being selfish and thinking of myself really.

Oh I don't know!

Shall I keep him ? I think that is what I am attempting to ask.

If you feel you could cope with another cat, and there will be no problems feeding an extra cat, why not

I would say go for it!! xx

There is only you that knows the answer to that question. I have two house cats and I feel that I could take more rescues but OH feels differently.

If you can give him a good home in addition to your currect pets then go for it. I don't think there's a limit...you will know yourself when you reach "crazy-cat-lady" status

See now this is the confusing bit. Perhaps he would be better going to someone who will devote all their time to HIM. Where as I devote my time to Misty and him..... decisions, decisions.. It would be nice to keep one of her litter.

OH just thinks about £££££££££££££££££.

I don't, I think about kittens and cats and Noodle being very cute and oh I don't know.

I will see who gets in touch. He is only 7 weeks old, so, someone could come along who will impress me and I may let him go.

It would have to be a very very good home though. He is very cute and the most vocal of all the kittens. I am not sure if that is a good thing or bad. He even meaows when pretend fighting!!

Re: How Many Cats is/are TOO MANY?

Here you go: A simple equation for sorting it out.

Cat_max = ceil( (x - .5)^-2 + 2 )

Ahh bless he does sound like a little cutey! If you can get him a home that would provide more attention then maybe that is the right thing to do.

I dont have the self restraint, I would be the world's worst breeder, I would be too upset to see them go

Re: How Many Cats is/are TOO MANY?

Think carefully MM - as you are wanting to go into breeding properly much as it would be nice t keep him a) he's not going to be part of your breeding programme and b) he will take the place of a breeding queen either one of your own you breed or one brought in. There is a limit really to how many cats you can have but especially if you are going into breeding then you might need his space for that prefect girl or boy you have breed that is perfect for showing and you won't have space for them. Then you will regret keeping him. If you are really, really sure you can give him all the time and care he needs as well as your queens etc then go for it, otherwise I would let someone else have him.

You're right Spid. I think I will await a nice owner coming along. I may give him to girl I work with. She would have loved to have bought one but money was an issue.

Re: How Many Cats is/are TOO MANY?

I think there is always one kitten in every litter that you just bond with that bit more. Sometimes you have to go with your sensible side and let them go, other wise you would want to keep them all

As the others have said, it will be taking up a place that you will need in the future, better to part now than a few years down the line when it will be much harder. As long as kitty has an excellent home to go to where he will be loved for the rest of his life thats all that matters
