Hi guys, i have a real issue! My little seal point 'siamese coloured' (moggie! Check the photo's for those that don't know! Lol!) kitten was spayed a while ago. It has taken a bit of time to see the proper re-growth of her fur and its growing back BLACK???! I've waited a while to make a thread just to wait and see but i'm telling you its black as ebony! Whats happened?? I'll upload a picture tomorrow to show you. Xxx

I've heard of this before, not exactly sure of the science behind it.

Re: What makes a cat's fur change color after a scrape or shaving?

Is this any help?

Re: OMG I just can't believe this! Why is it happening?

Also, found this on the net:

"If you're talking about the coat, this is common as the weather warms. The dark color on a Siamese's coat (and skin) is temperature-related. Cool parts of the body are dark, warm parts are lighter. As the weather heats up, many cats shed their winter fur and grow in fur of a much lighter color, since the warmer outside temperatures effect how warm the skin stays. Then they darken during the winter.

This is true for the leathers, as well. I have a chocolate point whose leathers turn cinnamon pink during the warm months and darken in colder months.

Some antibiotics are also known to cause light skin/fur, and sometimes perhaps even spaying could be a cause, because of hormonal changes. It's also suspected that dark fur may lighten if there is not enough protein in the diet"

So maybe it could be after the op it was a cold spot so hair got darker or something to do with medication? I'm no expert though, I'm sure there are other people on here who can offer a better explanation!

Re: OMG I just can't believe this! Why is it happening?

I was told my my vets that Lolas fur may grow back white (its blue)...its growing back mainly blue but with a few flecks of white, however the fur behind her ears has grown back white from when she had skin srapings taken

I can't remember the reasons why as told to me by my vets but apparently many pedigree cat owners, especially those that show, request to have the spay incision on the cats belly rather than the side so if it does grow back a diff colour its less noticable. My vet gave me this option but its more compliated surgery so I took the risk she would have a big white patch

Re: OMG I just can't believe this! Why is it happening?

it happens with colour point cats, it's darker in cooler areas, will be darker cuz of scar tissue. usually get colour points spayed midline not on the flank.

Re: OMG I just can't believe this! Why is it happening?

Hi There, Please dont worry. I have a seal point Ragdoll, and every march i have to have him dematted because he absolutely will not let me brush him.

His fur always comes in very dark brown/black which make him look really odd as the rest of his body is cream....i have had a few people ask "whats wrong with him?"

But by the time it is fully grown it changes to match the rest of his colouring although the undercoat does stay dark you really cannot see it at all.
