FURminator - what a tool!!

Hi all,

Even though my Tigger is short haired he doesn't half leave a lot of hair everywhere so decided to get a Furminator.

Arrived this morning and have just finished using it on Tigger's coat - half of my cat is now in the bin

Thing is, the only place I could get him to sit still for long enough to be groomed is on the couch in the living room. Sooo, I had the bright idea of using an old tupperware bowl with water in it - kept putting the hair from the grooming tool in there and then swished around to stop it flying everywhere.

The water was filthy when I poured it away - had no idea a cat could get so dirty!! Eeeewwww!!

Does anyone know if you can overdo it with the Furminator? Because I noticed little silvery bits in the fur once it was wet (bit like a slug trail really) Just worried I did it for too long and started to take some of his skin with it??)

Sure he would have shown signs of pain though if that was the case?

Oh well, at least I can use that famous old line tonight when the OH says what have you been doing today? Brushing the cat

They are fantastic!
I have the Moult Master, it's practically the same as the furminator but cheaper in price, I was amazed at how much hair came off my Bailey.

Re: FURminator - what a tool!!

My Bro has one for his German Shepherd... I can't believe how much fur comes out. I'm not sure it should take that much out. Personally I think it removes as much healthy hair as is does dead.

Iam not tried it, but I would worry It would strip too much coat out. does the coat still look and feel the same?

Re: FURminator - what a tool!!

I love the furminator...

It doesnt work on my longhaired persian though but any of other short or semi-longhaired cats i have in it works a treat on! I only use it for about 5min at a time once a week . After using it they do look a little odd for an hour or two - but a quick roll around and self groom sorts that!

I wouldnt use it on a show-cat personally, as it does make them more sleek than plush.

I used it on a friends super shedding labrador and it was amazing!

Re: FURminator - what a tool!!

not done a golden but ive seen the video of one on their website!

The labrador was amazing, never seen so much dead hair out! She's bought her own now, and now only has to sweep the floor once a day instead of constantly! Gone are the days of the hair tumbleweeds!

Re: FURminator - what a tool!!

I've never used one but i think im gonna buy one for my cat and for my kitty when she gets older ( wouldnt want to use it on her so young as she only has her baby coat, maybe when shes 7-8 months or something)
Theres a question, at what age do you think you can start using it?

Re: FURminator - what a tool!!

I dont use them on the kittens here, but once they start getting their adult coat i use it lightly to get them used to it. I start brushing kittens though from a very very early age - usually a couple of days while they are having a feed from mum. Once they are weaning they get brushed every day to get used to it.
