Yes that's a good point. Fizgig is far too fluffy and healthy looking for a stray. he'd also run if someone he didn't know came up to him in the street/garden.

I might try one more and see how long it takes him to lose that (I'm under no false illustions that he won't!) and then maybe give up.

Thanks everyone anyway, thought it was at least worth a post to find out

Re: collars

I would stay well clear of cheap collars, since they do not snap open if a cat becomes caught.

In extreme cases, a cat can actually lose their leg if it gets stuck inside the collar.

As I said before, I would not buy them a collar that wasn't safe for them.
