Hello everybody....
Just joined this site today, was hoping all you fellow animal lovers could give me some friendly advice......
I currently have an 11 month old neutered male cat called Ollie, I got him last August from a farm. as I was a novice at keeping animals, I thought he was badly behaved when he kept on ripping my curtains and breaking things. Since he was neutered in January, he has settled down and become a very loving little cat, although he does still have his boisterous moments. I'm going to university in september, and my partner works long hours, so we were considering getting another cat, or maybe a kitten to keep Ollie company come September....does anyone think this is a good idea? A friend of mine said that male cats sometimes get very jealous of new additions to the family and could try and suffocate a kitten? I hope someone can give me some advice.... |

Re: Hello everybody....
I think a mate for Ollie sounds ideal. He is still a huge kitten himself and I am sure he will appreciate someone for mad chasing games. I don't think a male cats get very jealous of new additions and try and suffocate them.
The trick is to find a kitten of either sex that has the perfect complementary temperament to Ollie's. If you take care over the introductions, so that Ollie still knows he is number one in your lives to minimise his stress, then the two should be firm friends in no time. Feliway plug ins can help with stress. Younger cats with loads of energy are usually incredibly impressed with the playing skills of kittens, and end up so keen to join in the fun, forget that they are playing with a stranger.

Re: Hello everybody....
It will certainly need to be a big cat to give Ollie a run for his money, he is very big (although not fat). I am swayed towards getting a female, as my friend says that two males will run riot.
We have just recently started letting him go outside, he has definetly found his place in the cat kingdom, and has no trouble letting his presence be known. There is a lovely little kitten of which Ollie is very fond, and he spends hours playing with it and cleaning it, so this makes me think that he may take to a kitten. |

Re: Hello everybody....
I think he would be fine, it'll probably be another few weeks before we get one though, get my holidays etc out the way. Ive so far had divided opinions about litter trays too, some people say it is a bad idea to let two cats share?

Re: Hello everybody....
All cats are different, its a play it by ear thing. Initially I would add to the number of trays you have. Kittens need more than one anyway, just so they don't have too far to go before they find one. Once they are friends and used to each other you will probably find them naturally using the same one, then you can gradually cut down.

Re: Hello everybody....
Hi
![]() I think getting a younger kitten of the opposite sex would be my choice and I would invest in another litter tray, some cats are funny about that! lol
