I have reached the depths of despair!

But only in a very funny way! I had to share this with my cat loving friends on this site!

My female Tonkinese, Mae, is obsessed with a purple elephant toy from the McDonalds Happy meals - they produced them in 2005, I have since found out, and Mae found it on a shelf in my stepdaughters room. Since then, she cannot bear to be parted from this small, somewhat grubby toy. She retrieves it like a dog would a ball, she carries it around, and if we won't throw it for her (and yes you do get bored after 30 minutes), tosses it around and pounces on it, before "loving it" half to death! I took it away from her once, to try and fix it up a little... she yowled the place down and drove me and my OH crazy stalking around looking for it. I soon gave it back.

Needless to say, after 3 - 4 months of this kind of behaviour, small purple elephant is looking a little worse for wear. Today, I found myself on the McDonalds "contact us" page on their website, asking them whether they had any small purple elephants in stock because my cat goes into a pining state if elephant is taken away from her. I look forward to their answer (I have offered to send them pictures and video clips should they require proof)!

Halfway through this little mission, I thought I may as well Ebay search "McDonald Happy Meal toys". Would you believe there are nearly 2000 of these toys up for sale on Ebay?! Great bit of entrepreneurial thinking by some people in my opinion, althouh I hesitate to think of the state of their health after all those cheeseburgers!!

I was in luck! 2 small purple elephants are up for grabs... One in packaging, one without. I'm pretty sure that Mae won't be too fussy about this small detail. I also found out, via this route, that the small purple elephant is called Lumpy and is from the Winnie the Pooh toy list. (I had my suspicions that this was the case, but again, small purple elephant is hardly recognisable these days!).

So even if McDonalds think I am completely bonkers (not that I think for one second this is a possibility) and don't respond to me, I should have a stash of small elephants winging their way to me by first class post to keep Mae's obsession under some element of control.

I have to say, I feel absolute relief at this development in Mae's fortune. But slightly disturbed that if anyone checks my ebay history, they are going to find a plethora of searches for "purple elephants" and "happymeal toys"!

But you've got to laugh.... haven't you?!

That is fantastic!! I have a burmese and she has a sock fetish, she too brings them to you and waits for them to be thrown and like you say, when you have had enough of that, she chucks them around and pounces on them. You've just gotta love the crazy little beasts!!!

Re: I have reached the depths of despair!

I know just how you feel I have been searching for a monkee like the one in the T.V adverts for my cat Dandi who had almost destroyed the one he had and it would take no more repairing, I also went on E-Bay and the only one I could get was similar but not exactly the same but I thought it would do and bought it! Was I ever wrong Dandi would not even touch it and just looked at me as if to say "Who is the fool here?" And people say cats don't know nuffing haha they haven't met mine.
Glad yours is happy again.

Lol - we have a collection of small furry mice that Mai Tai (Siamese) loves and plays with in the same way. I hid a couple of new ones for when the old ones are furless but madam found them while I was looking for something in the drawer
Wonder what ebay make of your obsession with purple elephants

Lol that's so sweet and funny. My one just likes to chuck all her toys in the food bowl, they get marinated in the gravy.

Blimey... thanks God for small mercies and Mae likes small purple elephants and not socks... although socks are easier to come by... my boy, Siegfried, is frightened of socks.... I tried to get him to wear one like a scarf once, and he has hated them ever since... I am such a cruel Mummy!

We'll have to see what Mae thinks of them when they arrive... you might have just burst my bubble though, as I had never considered that she may not like the new elephants?! Oh no!

It's definitely an Oriental cat thing isn't it - this retrieve game?! My old Moggie was intelligent - but Mae is getting on for cat genius IQ levels I think! My next thing is to teach her to stand on her hind legs, and roll over! Is there a Mensa for cats?!
