Dry food

sorry to bore yous all again about cat food. i now understand about wet cat food and meat content and things but a little unsure bout dry. is it essential to feed your cat dry? atm Sheldon has crap wet food (waitin for pay day to change it) 1 pouch in morn 1 at nite and he has dry food to nibble on durin the day which i think he does like abit like us havin a biscuit. so my question really is wat do i look for with dry food and is it essential that cats have it if not wat cud i substitute it with maybe half way between feeds to keep him goin?

thanx and sorry to sound like a broken record its jst all very confusin

Re: Dry food

There are bad and not so bad dry foods,i feed pro plan and royal canin.Burns and james wellbeloved are good too avoid cheap brands like go cat, whiskas, and shop own brands as these do not contain all the needed vitamins and minerals needed to keep urinary track healthy.nature diet and hilife are good wet foods with good meat content.Felix, whiskas,go cat, shops own, arthurs are all low in nutritional value.

Re: Dry food

I leave dry food down 24/7 occasionally feed wet, some indoor cat food helps reduce poo smells/size.Less calorific value, can help with hairballs.

Re: Dry food

There are no good dry foods, regardless of the ingredients. Two main reasons :
  • Its a dry biscuit - causing permanent state of mild dehydration,
  • too high carb levels - cats only need roughly 2%

Your Cat a book by Elizabeth Hodgkins is a very good read if you are interested in whats best for your cat. She is a vet and breeder who has also spent time in the pet food industry.

Re: Dry food

The thing with dry cat foods is finding the one that suits you, your cat and your pocket. If you get all three then great stick to it.

Imho the best dry catfoods are things like origen. What your looking for is a very high meat content with little or no cereals and fillers.

Foods in the happy medium imho include burns, almo, james welbeloved and arden grange.

I have my cats on a raw diet (and forthglade wet food), but they do have access to arden grande all the day too.

hope it helps xx

Re: Dry food

hi Hayleyb

i couldn't agree more with Saikou. dry food has been a big part of our cat, Syd's, problem with crystals and cystitis. it didn't cause it but seriously aggravated it. Our cats have wet food only now (Syd will be on prescription food by the sound of it for the rest of his life)

I, like you, worried about them getting hungry while we are out at work - they are indoor cats and we are out from 8-6. But we make sure we give them 2 small meals before we go to work and then a larger meal when we get home and a small one before we go to bed - we were advised against giving 2 large meals a day. They have had this for the past month and are absolutely fine - far more so than when we used to fill them up with dry food. They have SO much energy and are so happy

I will certainly read the book advised as I am still learning - I dont want Syd on prescription food for the rest of his life - he is only 1 year old and misses his fish But neither of them seem to miss the dry food
