I feel I have damaged my already nonexistent relationship with Thomas

I know it is early days and Charlie has only been with us since Wednesday last week. But I can shake the feeling that I have damaged what little relationship with Thomas.

To give you an idea of the relationship we had:

Thomas rarely come to me or showed affection. The only times he would actively seek me out (if he wasn't trying to detach a limb from me) was if he wanted feeding or letting in or out. Eventually I accepted Thomas's terms and we bumped along.

But I had always wanted that lap cat, the main reason for offering Charlie a home.

However since Charlie's arrival Thomas is no longer speaking to me and will only look at me to glare evils. He won't come if I call (even for dinner) but he's still eating and doing his usual things. In fact he's actually started playing with Charlies toys. In the 4 years we've had Thomas and the numerous birthday and Christmas present toys he has never shown an interest in them.

My mother is of the opinion that Thomas is sulking and will get over it eventually. But it doesn't make me feel any less guilty.

Love your post Thomas sounds just like my Gizmo who must have been born grumpy I don't think you should carry on feeling guilty - Thomas was fickle with his affection before you got Charlie. He only has himself to blame

Re: I feel I have damaged my already nonexistent relationship with Thomas

Awwwwww but just like humans I'm afraid some cats are just moody pants.

My sisters cat is a prime example of this, she has a wonderful wonderful life with high quality food, all the rooms and love and attention a cat could want, occasional treats, a massive rural garden to roam, and even birds and mice if she takes the urge, but she still sits around throwing evils at everyone, and that's basically all she does!! Oh no sometimes she hisses too. Nothing will change this, my sister said she has been a bit moodier since the arrival of a little neglected 6 mnth old I gave her, but she'll eat with him now and nothing else, just sits under the furniture growling at him when he goes past, he is oblivious to her moods mind you, couldn't care less.

You cat is probably a Jeremy Clarkson of the cat world and you want a Felicity Kendall!

I hope he goes back to what he was like before soon, might take a little while though.

I would not feel guilty, as you have done nothing wrong. Sounds like he is being quite playful though, with the new toys!
xx

Tyler completely fell out with us when we got Willow, loved her no problem with them however went from an affectionate lapcat to a glaring, growling purr deficient furrball! Didn't last long but took two weeks for him to regain his singstar status lol

It sounds to me like he is sulking big time. He will come around eventually but the guiklt I an understand - it isn't nice living with a sulking kitty... they can get like teenagers! My cat can even slam doors

Thank you everyone for your replies. I could be that I am imagining it, but Thomas seems depressed (he also looks massive) and keep glaring as if to say, 'you've ruined my life!' lol

give it time i bet he becomes mates with charlie, maybe lock charlie in a room abit during the day to let thomas come in and see if he will be nearer you? just an idea, for now but in time he should accept the change.

Re: I feel I have damaged my already nonexistent relationship with Thomas

Thomas has been actively seeking out Charlie so he can give him a biff around the ears. Before Charile came here Thomas rarely came into the living room.

Thomas has since left me a dead rat by the back door. I do not thinnk this is a gift, more a case of reminding me just what he is capable of!

Things seems to be a bit better between Charlie and Thomas as Thomas has been licking Charlie while he sleeps.
