Nails - to cut or not to cut?

Hi,

Was wondering whether anyone can advise me on getting house cats nails cut? They are both very nervous rescue cats and would prefer not to put them through it if it's not necessary.

They are both always biting their nails, seemingly trying to pull the excess off. It must be bothering them but I just think they will go mental in the groomers!

They have a cat scratcher which they both use, but not with their dew or back claws.

Any advice?

Yes, it is something that you will have to get done. If you play with your cats on the floor you will start to notice that they can be quite painful when they accidently scratch you.

If they are particularly nervous then get them done at the vets or a groomer like you said. I just do my cats ones at home with some clippers from Pets at Home. It is a two person job though and I would also take my kitty to a groomer if I lived alone.

I do Mai Tai's claws myself but as WK says it is a two person job and even then we don't always get them all cut at the first attempt
Have to do them as they are very sharp if she accidently scratches when reaching for a toy and also stops her from leaving scratch marks on my oak floor when she bombs around the house at ninety miles an hour

Thanks for your replies. I think I will take the braver of the two, Mani, first and see how he gets on at the groomers.

I dont envy them like, they should be experienced though in knowing how to handle them. I think we would just terrify them if we tried at home.

I do both of mine at home. I must be very lucky as I can do them alone...they've both been having them done since they were kittens and I do it every couple of weeks

Mine were already adults when we took them in or I would have had them used to getting their nails cut when they were little.

I think I will give the local groomers a go and see how they fair.

Hi, I live in Willington, Crook. I am going to try the groomers at Bishop Auckland, "Splash Dogs", unless you have another suggestion?

Re: Nails - to cut or not to cut?

Thanks for all the replies. I have booked an appointment at Splash Dogs for Saturday for Mani and if it's not too much of a nightmare I will take Lola the following week.

I explained on the phone that this will be the first time and was reasured that they are experienced handlers so it shouldn't be a problem, fingers crossed!

What a palava!
