Well

During my normal grooming of luna my persian last night i found a massive matt! I feel so embarrassed as it must have been there for ages, but i never noticed it before. She gets groomed and combed every night and bathed once a fortnight. Its right under her armpitt and really felted down to the skin! I dont know how i have missed that developing, and feel like a very bad mum!

Anyway she is off to the groomers for the first time on monday. They are very good at getting matts out, and can also clip it if needed. I phoned the vets but they wanted to knock her out to do it. She is used to being groomed, and i use the clippers myself around her bottom to help keep it clean, and i use thinning shears to shorten the hair on her trousers as she is a mucky bugger and regulary gets poop stuck. I just dont feel confident going at such a big matt in the position its in. It must be pulling her skin and she doesnt enjoy her legs or tummy being done anyway. So i'm leaving it to the professionals!

I'm sure you will have much more luck than I did with Timmy, he hates being groomed and goes for you all the time, I felt awful and thought that the groomer would think I'd been neglecting him but I groom as much as I can until I get torn to pieces and then have to stop as he gets so worked up he's sick.

The groomer completely understood (Timmy has had a rough year doesn't like being pulled about) his situation and said they would give him breaks if needed to let him calm down so would probably take about 45 mins. An hour and a half later they still weren't finished as he kept going for them but had shaved his back legs and got loads of his undercoat out so had done really well, he was as good as gold having his claws clipped too. Unfortunately she had two dogs booked in and I had to collect him as he is terrified of dogs but have now made another appointment for him to go back and get his chest shaved as its matted and it'll be much quicker, less stressful and painful for him to have it shaved off.

My vet won't do it unless they're severely matted and I'm not going to let him get like that as its not fair. The groomer completely understands his situation and his very gentle with him so I think I'll have him shaved and go from there.

good luck - it is easy to happen - minnii gets mini ones on her trousers even though i brush them religiously.

Aud's off to the groomers tomorrow as well! lol! I'm really pleased i managed to find somewhere who were experienced with Persian cats - nervous ones at that as well!

I'm chuffed she doesn't have to be sedated now

I'm so pleased i'm not the only persian owner who's cat still gets matted! I religiously comb, brush, dry shampoo, eye bath etc every night, and a proper shampoo every other week. She has what they call a "cotton soft" coat. Its like cotton wool really really light and fluffy! This makes it so much more prone to matting.

Anyway, she's off to the groomers, no sedation, no anaesthetic and fingers crossed they will be able to get the matt out. I have asked them to clip around her bottom for me (well it saves me a job) and they are going to give her a real bath and pamper!

YAY!

I've told them to clip her quite short this time so I can start from scratch with her. She absolutely loves being brushed though - even meow's at me to get me to brush her!

Still, she's got matts! I think its from the recent hot weather we've had!!

I cant say my girl loves being groomed lol. She loves her back and face and tail being done, and then grumbles like a old woman having the rest done. Never moves, never tries to scratch or go for me, but my god she moans! lmao
