TIGGISMUM is on a distinguished road
Help my depressed cat ....

Hello, I have a 6year old BSH female cat. She is my very much loved pet. 2 years ago we moved back to my parents after having problems with a house move and then found it difficult to buy a new place. For 2 years she has happily lived with us all. She only ever sat on my lap, she would let others groom her and play with her but never sat on their lap. I spoiled her really. She was a house cat througfh her own choice, had access to outdoors but chose to stay in! In January I finally bought a new house and I moved in. As it needed lots of work I left the cat at mum and dads while all the building was going on. We have now got a 6 month old puppy living here and the cat has become ill. She is still at my mum and dads as seemed to get ill after the first visit from a rather excitable puppy (we did keep them separated by glass door). Because she got ill I didn't want to upset her more by moving her in to new house now that work is complete. I took her to vet and he thought it was sore throat, but a week later she is no better after antibiotics. She is now not eating and is very 'sad' looking. When I go round she will let me stroke her then walks off and sits with her back to me. I am worried she is depressed. Vet is investigating other possible causes but I think she may be pining for me. I want her to move in with me but don't want to upset her further. We could separate dog and cat with stair door until she is settled. Does anyone have any advice? Do you think she may be depressed? Should I bring her here and hope that spending time with me will perk her up, or will she probably get more stressed? Help please. Thanks.

Re: Help my depressed cat ....

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Pending the vets investigations I would invest in a couple of feliway plug in diffusers which may help her feel less anxious - one for your parents and one for your own house for when you move her back . It probably might have been easier if you could have moved your cat back first before getting the puppy as she could have established herself in the new house and the puppy would have been the "newcomer" instead of the other way around now - but hindsight is a wonderful thing! You could try swapping the pets bedding between the houses so they can get used to each others scents prior to trying to move her back and then when you do bring her home spend a lot of time playing/grooming her.
