Speying - change of behaviour?

as most of you know my poor cat carly had a terrible pregnancy and lost all her kittens, she had to get a c section to get the last kitten out and it only survived one day before having to be put to sleep

at the time of the c section, the vet also speyed her... now i thought that speying was supposed to calm cats down? we adopted carly at 6 months old and she's always been a very loving, extremely affectionate cat and never ever scratches or bites... but since having the op she has become quite hyper, she's still loving and affectionate but she's started going mad, chewing at our living room wires (wires that have always been there and she's never touched before) and when we play with her she has started grabbing our hands and biting us (like young kittens do when they're playing) but this is something she's never ever done before

has this happened with anyone else? she's also become very vocal, meowing a lot even when we're both in the house and trying to play with her, we make sure she's got her food, toys, water, clean litter tray but can't figure out why she's meowing so much, we don't know what it is she wants?

we're not letting her outside because her wound from c section is not completely healed and she's a long haired cat but where they shaved her she still hasn't got much hair and i don't want to let her out yet - maybe she wants to get out, although when she used to want out she'd stand at our front door and meow but she's not doing that

any ideas? i'm exhausted trying to keep her occupied! we were thinking of getting another kitten as maybe she's feeling lost/lonely from one minute having kittens and the next having none?

Re: Speying - change of behaviour?

The only thing that occurs to me is that
a) each cat reacts differently but in general, it takes a while for her hormones to settle
b) she will eventually calm down - not sure how long but for comparison with my Poppy it took about 3 months and with my Zoe it took about six months for them to settle into being nice sociable girls who behave in a reasonably normal way (for a siamese, that is).

Am sure that others will post more useful information.

Sending you best purrs.

Re: Speying - change of behaviour?

Give her some time. Her hormones are going a bit mental at the moment from everything that has happened. Do your best not to make a big deal over the naughty behaviour and try to ignore it. If you have to intervine then pick her up quietly and move her to a room or place on her own for a few mins. Come back to here when she's settled and then have some play time. Be sure you give her plenty of exercise and lots of attention.

If you still have her on kitten food, wean her off it. Get her on a neutered cat diet(Royal Canin) or adult diet(other brands). Be sure the food is a high good quality meat content and little cereals or fillers if you can, but this isn't always possible. You can search on here for some more informative diet threads to give you a better idea of what might work best for you. Bozita, Portia, Applaws(not a complete diet feed as treat), hi Life etc are all great choices.

To reduce stress and issues be sure she has places to mark, i.e. litter trays (a couple round the house in quiet areas), scratching posts and some beds. Purchase some Feliway diffusers and spray for the house this will help soothe her in this stressful time. She should settle down with time. She has a lot of energy to burn off from where she has prepared for these kittens.

Re: Speying - change of behaviour?

Ok thank you

I've not ben telling her off for biting as she's only just started it and I think she's just playing I don't think she's trying to hurt us

She's running around everywhere like a mad woman
