Advice on purchasing a Burmilla please.

Hi, New to the forum and hoping for some tips and advice.

I have been considering for some while buying a Burmilla strictly as a pet not for show. I came accross this breed after meeting a friend who has one and i was enchanted by the beauty and personality of these lovely cats.

However i have no garden, i live in a flat. Would this be a problem? How much can i expect to pay and is there anything that i should know? I have been researching on the internet which has only strengthened my resolve that this is the cat for me. However i don't want to purchase impulsively. Boy or Girl for example In what way do they differ in temprement? I'm not too worried about imperfections as i said this is a pet purchase only.

Many Thanks for your help and advice.

Vivi

Re: Advice on purchasing a Burmilla please.

Hi

I've been breeding Burmillas (and the other Asian varieties) for 16 years

I always recommend strongly that my kittens are kept indoors, or have access only to a safe outdoor run or enclosed garden area. So living indoors is not a problem at all. All of my cats are indoors and they mostly don't even think about going outside.

sex doesn't really make much difference when you purchase a kitten as it will either be neutered already (as mine are) or you would have to agree to neuter by 6 months of age, if you are wanting a pet and not show/breeding.

You would expect to pay roughly £350-£500 depending on where the breeder is located. I ask £400 for my kittens (inlcusive of neutering, microchipping and of course full vaccination)

Feel free to visit my website for more information

Re: Advice on purchasing a Burmilla please.

Well there you are, Vivi, sounds like you have a starting point. If Naomi doesn't have Burmillas at the moment, or is too far from you, there are a number of other breeders, it depends where you are based.

In my experience so far, boys are more affectionate - often rather too affectionate if you have several cats (I really don't need cats sitting on my lap in the loo, or insisting on laying in my arms for hours when I am trying to write an essay!)

Congratulations on choosing a beautiful breed - and here is a picture of my (alas long dead) Huggibear Silversand to whet your appetite a bit more

Re: Advice on purchasing a Burmilla please.

Thankyou kozykatz . I had already visited your website Very informative and helpful. The pictures are wonderful I'd missed your blog though which i have just visited. The little blue Asian girl is absolutely adorable. Can you explain any distinct differences between the asian and the Burmilla. I did read your write up. I;m . Are the terms interchangeable? Previously i have read that the Burmillas were first bread in 1941, it seems the Asians were first bred in 1981. Just trying to understand the distinction, if there is one.

lizward i am based on the south coast, though have a car so the journey would be possible, nearer obvioulsy more convenient.

Huggibear Silversand what a looker!! Certainly loved the camera and the camera loved him. The silvers are truly stunning, personal preference is for a blue or lilac. I remember my nan had a cat run when younger and she had a Russian blue?

The more i read the more i realise how in depth it all is. For me overall personality will be the decider i think. There is a breeder in southampton i think which isn't too far and one in East Sussex. Though i don't think either have Burmilla's at this time.

Many Thanks Again

Re: Advice on purchasing a Burmilla please.

hi again

The first litter (said to be an accidental mating, though it may well have been deliberate!) was born in September 1981, a cross between a Chinchilla Persian and a lilac Burmese. Not sure where 1941 came from!
The Burmilla is the Shaded variety of the Asian breed (Asians also come in Smoke, Tabby, Self and Tiffanie which is the semi-longhair version)

My blog is way out of date - I must get it sorted soon
I do have an Asian litter at the moment, no Burmillas unfortunately, although I do have a very pretty brown ticked tabby girl not spoken for as yet (also a brown boy). Can send pics privately if you want. Just tried to upload new pics to my website but couldn't get the files transferred

I also love silvers, that's what I want to breed but I keep getting everything but!!!

Re: Advice on purchasing a Burmilla please.

thanks for answering my oh so novice questions

I'm going to resist your pics at the moment. I will only be completely disarmed and I'm in no hurry and so will hold out for a silver/blue/lilac or thereabouts. I'm coming around to the idea of Asians if a Bumilla is not possible.

Please keep me posted once you have a new litter or know of anyone else.

I will check in only occasionally as i currently have no pets so there is no other reason for me to visit. Once i make a purchase i will be back probably for some further much needed advice. Last had a cat as a child. Its been a long time.

Thanks Again

Vivi

Re: Advice on purchasing a Burmilla please.

If I ever breed a blue silver burmilla I doubt it will be going anywhere - i've always wanted one
I always post details of new litters on my website so do feel free to keep an eye on it.

None expected for the moment though - trying not to breed more than 3 or 4 litters per year max. due to economic situation!

He made Champion. I never tried to get any further as I didn't think he was good enough to ever make Grand Champion. He had a sister who was better but after two CCs she developed a bald patch on her ear and I never dared show her after that. When I see what gets through vetting in these days I could kick myself for not having taken the risk.

I have a litter of asians due tomorrow - I am totally paranoid having recently read of someone losing an entire litter at birth and having had my only litter so far this year stillborn (only one kitten though, and with symptoms beforehand that something was wrong, I surely am just being paranoid about this lot, I hope so!). Assuming they arrive OK there is a chance of a blue shaded silver burmilla (only third generation so no use to Naomi but would be fine for you) but I'm even further away! Have you tried the Asian Cat Association site? They have lots of members down south.

Anyway, since you liked my Sandy, here are his sisters.

Re: Advice on purchasing a Burmilla please.

I promise I will post here and tell you what she has. I never like to say a kitten is definitely available until it really is ready to go though. Whilst it isn't common, it is not unknown to lose kittens even at 8 weeks - happened to me last year twice. If by any chance I get one - I do like to deliver, especially if someone pays the petrol But i'm sure you'll find one before then.
