Kitten safety

Okay, so I'm boring everyone to death about our new kitten. I do have a few questions though and the first is really important.

Harry is currently sharing a night crate with his mum and siblings. When we bring him home however, we appreciate that he must be kept safe and away from Ed (our other cat), until he settles in.

I thought that our office may be a good place for him, but there are lots of wires to computer equipment. Should I go out and buy a crate for him, which I really do not want to do, since he will hopefully only need it for a couple of weeks or so.

Your advice if greatly appreciated, since I do not want to put him at risk.

Re: Kitten safety

I would also be interested in the answer to this as I have the same worries except our resident pet is a dog!

I wouldn't have to buy one though - a friend has kindly offered to donate her old one.

It's such a shame that you cannot rent equipment like this. I think there must be a gap in the market.

I'm not being tight, but these crates are darn expensive to buy for just a couple of weeks or so.

Re: Kitten safety

Nina, speak to you vet as you can sometimes rent a crate from them (they sometimes rent them for cage rest)

or advertise on Freecycle etc to borrow one?

Re: Kitten safety

Well I am a great one for fashioning things like this myself! I made a cat tree / activity thingy yesterday and I am dead proud - it cost me about £13 for the stuff and have managed to come up with something you would pay about £30 for I suspect. My hands hurt like hell from the sisal rope though

However, even my imaginative brain cannot come up with a way to make my own crate cheaply!

Re: Kitten safety

another option is, wrap all the electrical cabels in garden hose... cut lengths to suit and slice up the edge so it slots over the cables

if either of you were closer to me I would lend you my crate

Re: Kitten safety

I used my cat carrier, cos he felt safe in there and we could leave it open for him when he was ready to have a little explore - if he felt a bit nervous he could just nip back in he had his blanket in there with his scent on too so he felt more secure - plus its not a waste of money cos it can be used for the vet trips - good luck with your new kitty

Re: Kitten safety

I'm ok - I am lending one from a friend. But a carrier is a good idea

Thanks Indy.

We have two cat carriers and could leave that in our office, but I'm unsure if we could get the cables made safe, since there are lots of them with the electrical equipment.

Have looked at ebay and the prices range from £60 - £230! Unfortunately, I am useless at trying to make anything, and my o/h has MS, so his hands are not too dexterous at the moment
