Neutering Cats

Hi

This might seem like a stupid question but does a neutered cat still grow to its full potential size?

Thanks

Hi,

Well I have a 17 month old Maine coon who was neutered at five months and is a whopping 20 lbs. Some people hold off with their cats but I honestly don't think it makes any difference, if they are meant to be big cats then they will be regardless of when they are neutered.

Izzie

Re: Neutering Cats

If a cat is neutered before puberty (as most pet cats are) then it's likely to grow slightly larger than a cat that isn't neutered.

Re: Neutering Cats

hmmm I think they do really, i just think they have a spurt later on in life... my male has just spurted at two years which i think is late. I imagine there would be an element of hormones that would increase growth rate, then again it will also increase the tendency for other actions that may not be worth the extra half an inch or inch in the long run!

Re: Neutering Cats

He should still grow up to be big and chunky, but it depends more on what mom/dad oher ancestors are like, some british are heavier boned than others. He wont be as jowly as an entire

Thats what i was going to say.

They should still grow to their potential size, but they wont get the true "tom" look with the bigger jowels and bigger looking head. However unless you plan on showing your cat there is absoloutly no reason imho to delay neutering.
