Unhappy Sad news

We took our 16 year old moggy Sammy to the vets on Friday due to his ongoing health problems. He's lost a lot of weight and condition since Christmas. Anyway, a scan shows he has one enlarged kidney which has a malignant tumor in it. Options are to operate and remove the kidney. Then if he survives the surgery he'd be on several medications a day, with a 30% chance of seeing another year.

Or do we just let him have a last few weeks of peace and quiet and make the decision to have him PTS when the time comes? It's a decision we've had to make several times over the years, and does not get any easier I can tell you

Sam has had a long and happy life. He was a rescue cat we took on at a few weeks old and he's been a right character.

I think we'll pamper him and make his last few weeks as comfortable as possible. He's a shadow of his former self and it's painfull to watch him now.

He's got a favorite tree in the garden he likes to sit under in the sun. That's where I'll put him.........

Re: Sad news

Sorry to hear about Sammy Ian. I think you are making the right desicion though. It is too easy to put an animal who doesn't understand what is going on through invasive procedures because we want them to. The cancer could have spread and a 30% prognosis isn't good enough.Give him a big cuddle from me.

Re: Sad news

sorru to hear about Sammy I think I'd do the same at 16 you dont even know if he'd survive the op then you'd still have the bill at the end of the day, even if he didnt.

An is it fair to put him through all that pain at 16 yrs old? while he's happy & comfortable just pamper him & let him enjoy his last few weeks

Re: Sad news

Your post has brought tears to my eyes Ian. I'm so sorry for poor Sammy but I think you are making absolutely the right decision to leave your lovely cat enjoy his last few weeks of peace and pampering instead of subjecting him to the suffering of an operation which may or may not leave him any better off. My thoughts are with you ((())) and wish you strength to make the decision when you know it is time.
The thought of him sleeping under the tree is lovely. My two (Josh-cat aged 13 and little Lei Lou hit by a car aged 10months) sleep on the sunny bank outside my kitchen window.

Re: Sad news

My thoughts are with you all, have been through similar so know how you will struggle.
My lad was 14 and the apple of my eye,and when he took ill we did everything we could, but the end was around the corner and he took his favourite seat in the sun on my bedroom window ,gave a small cry so I took him in my arms ,gave him a kiss and love and he closed his eyes and left us.

He went in peace ,at home, with love, and I still miss him everyday.

Re: Sad news

awh it is heart breaking news Ian... but as we all know the greatest show of love we can give our furry family is helping them feel as good as possible... even if that means letting them go peacefully and with dignity.

if he were younger it may be worth the risk but 16 happy years is better than 16 happy years and one horrible 17th year

*hugs*

the thought that you can have him in his favourite spot, where you can visit and chat and keep him up on the news is lovely

Re: Sad news

Posts like these don't usually make me cry, but my eyes are watering now. I hope Sammy's last few weeks are full of lots of love and cuddles.

Re: Sad news

Aw what a sad post but what a lovely owner you are, you are putting the welfare of your cat first and thats the hardest thing to do putting through all that stress would have been alot for an old cat to deal with. Think you have made absolutely the best decision for him and my thoughts are with you.
