dont know if this cat is a stray cat or house cat

there is a cat that visits me (kevin) and sarah, comes to our house alot, we call the cat beastie, beastie likes to come to the back door, and have to feed him or her, dont have much to feed him or her, we are unemployed, but sometimes give beastie some ham, the ham you put in a sandwich

how old do you all think beastie is?

is beastie a male or female cat? we think beastie is a male cat

is beastie a stray or house cat? we see beastie alot so we think beastie is a stray cat

i want to try and help beastie, but dont know what to do, dont have much money, dont want to phone the rspca, i think we would miss beastie if the rspca took beastie!

what is that lump on beasties side?

what can i do to help beastie?

YouTube - white stray or house cat, we call him or her beastie

Re: dont know if this cat is a stray cat or house cat

He /she has a nasty matt by the looks of it - I would guess that is what the lump is. Have you tried getting your fingers behind it to see whether it is just held on by hair? The only other possibility would be a tumour but my money is on a simple matt.

If you can take him to the vet, they will be able to scan for a microchip and will not charge you for doing that (phone first to check though!) - that way you will know. But if that matt has been there for a while it does seem as if the poor thing is likely to be a stray. Still, his owners might be desperately looking for him.

Don't hand him over to the RSPCA, in some locations they are very keen indeed to destroy animals (where are you?). If you need to find him a home, try Cats Protection instead.

Re: dont know if this cat is a stray cat or house cat

Hiya,

I second lizward's opinion. I did this with a cat that looked like a stray and kept coming into my garden last year. Incidentally I also fed it sandwich ham lol. They seem to love that.

Took the cat to a local vet and they gave me all the info I needed via the chip. I did have to leave the cat with the vet though while they traced the owner. Hours later the little thing was reunited with the neighbours who live just across the street from me.

One other tip as well - I used a cardboard pet carrier which I ordered from the internet as I didn't have a proper carrier at the time. Try to borrow a proper carrier if you can as the little thing dug out of the box (via one corner) 5 minutes into the trip to the vet. Nearly had a heart attack and the cat didn't feel much better lol.

Failing that, my local area has a service called Pet Pals who will take an animal to the vet's if you can't manage it for whatever reason. Might be worth having a look if there's one locally to you if need be.

Ok, sorry for the essay but I know the dilemma you're in but getting a vet to check him/her over really is the best bet at this stage.

Hope it all goes well!

I would say he is a stray. If not he needs new owners

I would take him to your nearest cats protection

Re: dont know if this cat is a stray cat or house cat

Aaah - poor Beastie. He/she is very lucky that you're taking an interest in his/her welfare.

Right, I've just done a quick google search and it's brought up quite a list of vets in and around Dagenham. As the previous poster said the majority of vets will do a chip scan for free. If there's a chip then the vets have to try and contact the previous owner (three days they'll keep trying for I was told) but if there isn't one or no owner comes forward then you'll have to think how to best get Beastie some treatment for that lump.

It's not easy when you're not working - I know, I'm in the same boat at the moment.

Have a look on yell.com or google for vets in your area. I've pasted the list I found below. Might be worth giving the RSPCA a call as well as they do give reduced rates for people who are unable to afford to pay the normal vets rates (not sure what the criteria for that is though!)

Hope this helps

Re: dont know if this cat is a stray cat or house cat

Me again, just realised that I was talking as if you were def. thinking of keeping Beastie. I don't even know if that is the case. Sorry, that's just me I guess. Every cat that remotely looks like a stray I want to take in. Because of that though mine never turn out to be strays lol.

As Acacia 86 so rightly says - try your local branch of cats protection as well they're very helpful in my experience.

Here's the link for them as well:

Re: dont know if this cat is a stray cat or house cat

It certainly looks to me as if Beastie is a stray, or as someone else said on here, if Beastie has owners she/he needs new ones !. The lump on the side certainly looks like matted fur, can you feel the lump, you can tell if it is fur or if it is anything else you need to take Beastie to the vets (call the vets first and explain the situation). I have a white cat who is grubby from going outside but not as grubby as Beastie so my guess would be that Beastie is outside 24/7. If you are feeding Beatie Ham make sure you provide a bowl of clean water as well as Ham is quite salty, you might want to get a bag of Economy Complete cat food from Tesco, it is only about £1.20 for a massive bag (will last one cat at least two weeks) which would be a lot cheaper than you giving Beastie ham. Well done on looking after Beastie. Also on another note you will need to get Beastie checked at somepoint for FIV etc etc. Good Luck.

Re: dont know if this cat is a stray cat or house cat

Beastie looks quite poorly from your You Tube video. He/She looks like she/he has some kind of furr loss which could be mites or something. She/he 'looks' female. May have kitten somewhere.
If you were going to take to the vets I would suggest you use a towel to pick it up and have a box ready with an easy to close lid as Malaguti suggests ^^. It will bite and scram as soon as it knows it can't get away from you - it looks almost ferrel. But it seems to need help

Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do...
