Hi
I am researching the breed, hoping to get one end of this year/beginning next year depending on finances ![]() Just a couple questions... how big are the females in UK? a friend in Germany is a breeder and is horrified at the size of the british cats, claiming that females should be no heavier than 5.5-6.8 kilos or 13-15lb yet when looking at breeders in UK they have been moaning that the girls that size are too small? which is a more true standard? the mainland european or the british? Should I look at importing if I prefer the European standard? I have family in Germany so is easy enough to do along with contact with a couple European Breeders... as well as knowing a couple breeders in the UK that use imported bloodlines so presumabley smaller cats. Which are better for showing? the cobbier, bigger british style or the leaner, lithe, slightly smaller and elfin faced European style?

Re: Norwegian Forest Cats
my boy is off swedish and danish imports, he was bred in the uk though, so you dont need to import yourself (there is expense involved in this too), just buy from a breeder here who has imports....it is true that there is a definite difference in the european types and the british types. the swedish breeders know what they are breeding though and have reached a very high standard, and the swedish imports ive seen have been huge
if you go to shows and look at the forest cats you'll see the difference, the muzzle varies a lot, as well as size. have a look at the standard of points for the breed. they arent supposed to be "cobby" and muscular like a maine coon, but a tad more dainty and delicate looking, but still very large and strong. there are a few very good breeders in the uk with top imported lines. Re: Norwegian Forest Cats
the 2 main breeders I am looking at in UK and the one in Germany (good friend of the family) all have very good European lines and although the boys are brutes and they are big cats, because they are more slender than they look with all that fur the girls still weigh in at around the 6 kilo mark. What I need to know is if this is any good for showing in the UK as the ones I have seen being shown seem to be heftier in build, the girls hitting the 7kilo mark but the same height as the more slender build I prefer.
It's just a case of if the heftier ones are better for showing then sod it, I'll get a pet standard and not bother with searching for a show girl.

Re: Norwegian Forest Cats
perfect = Silver Tortie
otherwise, Blue Tortie, Blue Tabby, Blue Tortie Tabby or Silver Tabby ![]() knowing me I'll end up with a red but I basically don't want standard tabby, black and white or calico tortie... my only steadfast must is I want a girl to even up the numbers, and I want a little Princess ![]()

Re: Norwegian Forest Cats
I believe the Norwegian Forest Cats here in Sweden are quite big. I'd say the average weight on males are 7 kg and on females 5 kg. A few of the studs reach 10 kg.
According to the FIFé standard the Norwegian Forest Cat is a large cat. It doesn't say anything about weight though but the medium sized cats within FIFé weigh 3-5 kg (females on the lower end and males on the higher). I think you should go for the type you like the most, not after which one is the easiest to show. |

![]() my boy being a swede is going to be huge, and he is soooooo long, but he hasnt gone towards the maine coon male (obviously i have MC's too to compare to) but he is going to be bigger thany my very big MC girl, but he has kept the less muscular, slender look that the NFC should have. and obviously the head of the nfc is very different to the MC. poshmog's NFC was in the pe next to mine at the SLH show oddly enough lol |
