Re: Cat sitter, cattery or take her with us.

Am lucky enough ,or unlucky which ever way you look at it to have a daughter still at home so she looks after the brood .
But when the day comes that she moves out ,I would ask around for recommendations for catteries ,not quite comfortable with someone coming in.
I think my worry would be if I took them with me is that they would get out in strange surroundings.

Re: Cat sitter, cattery or take her with us.

if it was me i would leave my cat at home and have a relative come in for an hour a day, even every other day. I have auto feeders/water dispensers. My cat doesnt seem bothered about being alone, though i do work full time. For me this would be the least stressful option for the cat, she would be in her own environment, same smells, same scene. She's a total indoor cat, no other pets, being in a cattery around new people and having howling cats all day and night would totally freak her out i think. She'd probably just sleep most of the time at home.

I would leave her at home and take your friends kind offer to look after her. I have looked after my neighbours cats many times while they have been away sometimes for up to 4 weeks at a time. They are much happier in their own surroundings if its an option.

Unfortunatly neither of us have any family within a 200 mile radius or I would do that That and Taz is used to having someone around 24/7 and a 5 min stop over by my friends probably wouldn't be enough for her. Thanks for all the replies folks. Having carefully considered it we are now asking around for reccomendations for catteries on the basis that she will need to get used to being in one when we take our honeymoon next year. I'd rather that her with us this time but I don't trust the people we are going away with to remember to keep doors/ windows shut.

Sorry I missed this. It's simple. if you take the cat with you, she only has to cope with new surroundigns. If you put her in a cattery, she has to cope with new surroundings, new people and boredom.

I once took 11 cats on holiday to a very rural village near Penrith. The very next day they were coming for walks with me round the footpaths and playing in the huge garden. They loved it! The only thing that upset one of them was seeing a pig, that sent her scarpering off back to the cottage, but she was there waiting for me when I got back.

But DO get your cat microchipped before you go, if she isn't chipped already, just in case she escapes.

Liz

I think I would get someone in to look after her, you would be mortified if she escaped whilst you were away and she wouldnt be able to find her way home, being in a new house will stress her out loads as well. Leave loads of treats for your friend to give her and leave her at home. I dont know about anyone else but my furbabies dont really mind having the routine changed, during the week they get fed at 6AM and left pretty much to their own devices for about 6 hours and then get fed again and then get dry biscuits at night, but at the weekends it all changes and they get fed 9AM they have me around all day and most of the time dont get the evening meal until a lot later, they dont seem to mind at all. As long as they have their baskets, toys and a few treats every now and again. x

Re: Cat sitter, cattery or take her with us.

Welcome - Pet Sitter Swap - Virtually free pet sitting

I was very lucky to found my neighbor just 1 block away from us from that website, we look after each other's cat when needs to go for holiday. After we found each other from that website, we meet up, exchange name card, IDs, home address and contact details etc, then arrange time for home visit to meet the cat. Everything works very well, my lovely neighbor came in twice a day one her way to work or back home to feed/check and clean the litter tray when I was away and I do the same when my neighbor is away.
