Girl Kitten and Boy Kitten (Not Related) - Help Please

Howdy all, am looking for some advice please?

I'm bringing home my new little boy kitten (Mogg) in two weeks time. He will be a companion for my 4 month old girl kitten (Bags). I can't have Bags spayed until 20th May as the vet tells me she isn't old enough until then. The vets advice is to get a pen for Mogg and keep them separated until Bags has been 'done'. It all seems very complicated!! Have I made a mistake in choosing a little boy? Is keeping them seperate the best/only option? Will it not be detremential to their relationship? Help, please!!!

As per the other response it will depend uopn the age of your male companion. There is also a difference in opinion re vets as to when Kittens can be speyed/neutered.

Has your girl come into season yet (if she has you will know about it)?

When I brought Casper home I tried to keep him and Tally apart using a cage, it lasted a day! Granted she is alot older and actually didnt want to play anyway but I have not had any problems until last night, Casper is being neutered today! (5 months).

Hi, thanks for the replies. Mogg will be 8 weeks when I get him and Bags has not yet come into season. They are indoor cats as I live in a first floor flat on a busy road.

Thanks again.

you dont really have to worry about your boy until he gets to around 5 months old.

Thanks for that. The bloke in the vets said that by about 12 weeks his nads will have dropped and he'll start looking at Bags in a different way....

they may have started to drop from the 4 month mark the lil swimmers aren't any good til 5 months on as a rule, you do get some early developers but you can easily spot the signs... your little boy will turn into a stroppy teenager with a lot of pent up energy and bolshyness... that's when the snip is needed

Indy and Misha also had a slightly funny problem just before snip that their fur would poof up for no apparent reason... they got ever so embarressed when it happened

Thanks all for the really helpful replies, sometimes I wonder whether the vets are just scaremongering!

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a cage/pen for introductions? Not too expensive or even a loan one??

Re: Girl Kitten and Boy Kitten (Not Related) - Help Please

try your local freeads

Also ring around vets, they occasionally have them available for rent for when animals need cage rest... ours rent them at £2 a day

or eBay, if you get the stupidly big one (for alsations, mastiffs etc) they are £40-£50 ish inc delivery and you then have a safe pen available for if you need to confine your kitties (ie deliveries, decorating... anything needing the door open for long periods) and you can even set it up on a lawn (if you have a shared garden area) for them to enjoy some outside time safely

I would lend you mine but you are too far off am afraid, would be cheaper to buy a new one than the postage on sending mine both ways
