Advice on bringing new kitten home, please!

I am after some advice please!

We have decided to get another kitten and we are picking her up tomorrow morning, we currently have a 6 month kitten at home and I was just wondering what the best way to introduce them is??

I am feeling very nervous!

Also, I just wanted to add that we only really have the weekend to settle her in as we are back to work on Monday.

Re: Advice on bringing new kitten home, please!

It varies depending on the cat, but what I did with Indy and Misha was this

1) place carrier with Misha in lounge

2) let Indy sniff carrier (Misha was also curious, not scared)

3) take Indy away and feed him, fed Misha in lounge

4) let Misha out in lounge (Indy shut out)

5) brought Indy in on harness and lead (much sniffing)

6) took lead off Indy, they cautiously played

7) seperated at night/when we were out until no hints of jealousy showed, took a week

now I knew very little about cats when I did this and have found out since that it is very risky. But because they were both so young and desperate for company it worked.

Kittens are incredibly adaptable so as long as you know the new girl is healthy and so is existing kitty then I would give an immediate, but supervised and cautious meeting and see how they initially react. Remember both are babies and will need loads of reassurance though.

Thanks for the advice. I have no idea how Mazie will react when we bring the new kitten in, she is a very friendly and playful kitten and we have never even seen her hiss but I guess it could be a completely different story tomorrow!

We know both are healthy as Mazie has recently been to the vets and Missie is coming from the RSPCA and was checked yesterday so we have no worries there.

When cats are so young they can get along much better and introductions are quite painless!

I've done it 3 times now and i've just placed the carrier (with the new cat in) in the lounge and let them come out in their own time. Both Audrey and the boys had a little sniff of eachother and then began to play! I always make sure there are lots of toys about and spend as much time with them as i can.

It will be fine though - just go for it

Re: Advice on bringing new kitten home, please!

Well we brought Mickey home on Saturday morning and what a weekend! Mazie is completely put out and keeps trying to attack him, Mickey thinks she is great so keeps going up to her only to be hit!

Mickey also has bad diarrhea which Mazie now has so they are off to the vets this afternoon. I left Mickey in the spare room this morning with all of his things and let Mazie have the run of the flat as this is what she is used to. Is this the best thing to do for the time being? Mazie seems to be very annoyed at Mickey's presence!!

Re: Advice on bringing new kitten home, please!

Hi,

Firstly hope Mickey is alright with his vet visit, he probably has a bit of an off tummy due to stress of the move, worth getting it checked though.

I think Maizie will get used to him really quickly, age wise its a very good time to introduce a new kitten as she will adapt very quickly. She maybe put out for a few days but curiosity will get the better of her. Try and play with them together, sharing toys like feather sticks tend to get them involved with each other and they are concentrating on the toy so get used to each other without even knowing it.

Best of luck

Izzie

Whatever you do, DONT dump them both on the floor together, else you'll never see them again. Do it gently and let them get curious about each other.
