one wont be litter trained! :-(

Hi

My partner and I recently got two lovely kittens who are now about 3 months, however one of them keeps going in the wrong places! they are two boys and the smaller one is fine using the litter tray, but his brother uses it one minute and the next will pee on the bed, or poo on the carpet, he doesnt seem to realise that there is only one place to go and that is the litter tray. it is happening almost every day now and is getting too much for us, i dont know why only one of them is having problems? we have had them for over a month now and I would have thought he would learn.

any suggestions on how to get him to use the litter tray would be appreciated for the sake of our home and our sanity!!!

I think your boy is a little bit comfused. Try to remove all the wee/poo smell, they'll remeber and find the place they marked before, some white vinegar with soap water would help a lot.
take him to his tray if he's doing something like walking backward, or digging with his front legs, take him to his tray first thing in the morning, or after his meal. this is how I litter train my cat, hope you find them useful

Re: one wont be litter trained! :-(

He's still very young, he has got his wires crossed somewhere. He is still young enough to not always be able to control himself when he needs to go, and if he is upstairs or in another room, he may not get to his tray in time.
If there is only one tray, and you are working, he may object to using one that is already used. Try adding another tray.

Make sure you have used a proper pet odour eliminator product where ever he has been to completely remove scent traces.

Don't let him in the bedrooms until he's sorted and retrained.

Try keeping him in just one room for a few days, until there are no more accidents. He just needs the msg reinforced.

Do NOT punish him or do anything to intimidate him, he might become frightened of using the tray altogether.

There is a litter called Cat Attract that you can buy that is very good for re training. It's pricey, but you could mix a good scoop in with your usual litter to make it go further.

If you have changed litter, try changing back to what ever the breeder was using. Kittens are easily confused by change.

Re: one wont be litter trained! :-(

We've got a special cat odour removing carpet cleaner, and obviously wash anything he has been on, but he seems to just go wherever the fancy takes him! and the problem is we can never really catch him "in the act" always just after or we smell it and go on the hunt for it! we have had to keep them both locked in the hall where the litter tray, scratching post and food and water is kept whenever they are left alone in the house or when we are asleep, we dont want to confine them but we dont know what else to do......

Re: one wont be litter trained! :-(

You should confine him to a smaller space while he's doing this anyway, it makes the litter tray more accessable for him and easier to retrain him x

as has already been mentioned put him in litter tray after his meals and also at other points too, just to remind him it's there x also scrape his front paw through it so he gets used to the texture of it etc x

The cat attract litter does work, i had to retrain my 4 neuters not to use the garden as the litter tray and it has helped a lot, but not on all of them x

I'd definately try 2 litter trays - they may be territorial about them until they are neutered.

i would buy a kitten cage and pop him in it this will stop the pooing all over and he will learn to poo in litter and if he messes it is not all over the house

Re: one wont be litter trained! :-(

Some cats won`t use the litter tray when under stress or after a shock. Are you sure that`s not the case? Because confining the cat would do even more harm in that case.

Also does he have his own litter trya or are they sharing it? I would try and confine him and give him his own. He will get used to it...
