Cat collar quandry

I need some help as i'm trying to decide what to do about a collar for Patch.

Last Friday week, he got caught on something and only realised he could break free when we were outside frantically calling for him. I was all for collars then so went out and bought a replacement, and bless him he came as soon as he heard the bell and wanted it put on (very different to the first time!). Thursday i came home from work and couldn't place what was different until i spotted the lack of collar.

So do i go out and buy another one (plus id tag) and wait for him to get caught up & lose it again, or leave him with no collar and the birds (bearing in mind it is spring) to his mercy!

Any help with this decision would be great.

Yeah, it's a tricky one. Our old moggy, Sam will not keep a collar on, and after loosing several, for the last 12 years we've not bothered. The new quick release types are very good, but maybe too easy to get out of. The older type (with elastic) are stronger - but risk harming the cat.

With Dexter we have ordered several of the quick release type with his details printed in the fabric. We'll see how we get on..........

The two he's lost have been the quick release ones. Where did you order your new collars from? - like the idea of the details being printed on.

Re: Cat collar quandry

My old cat Marmaduke(rip) used to loose his at a rate of one or two every week so I resorted to buying a cheap safety collar and writing our phone number on the actual collar in permanent marker which made it a bit cheaper, we are lucky with the cats we have now as they rarely loose thiers.

It's very likely a good thing they did their job and released, better than being caught on something and trapped. I have a friend who lost a cat in a terrible incident with a collar that wouldn't release.
Is he microchipped? That might be a more sure way of ID if he is going to be a habitual collar escapee?

Someone at work suggested a buckle one, but i'm afraid of him getting stuck (or worse) so thats an absolute no go.

He is microchipped so if anything happens they could trace him back to me. I suppose what is concerning me a bit is whether someone would see him without a collar and immediately assume he is a stray, despite him looking healthy. Plus with baby birds around (i had a blackbird nesting last year close to the house) .......

If he's getting stuck on things then a buckle collar are a no go! I have to agree though people see a cat without a collar and automatically think they are a stray, or not looked after well.

I would just try a couple of different types and see which is the most difficult to get off
