Re: Cat collar quandry

None of mine have collars, my Grans cat Sampson went missing for 3 weeks once, he eventually turned up but his front leg was broken & caught in the collar, he was terribly thin and very lucky to be alive. He had obviously got his collar caught on something, had broken his leg by trying to get free by putting it through the collar. So it has really put me off I'm afraid. Mine are chipped, but some people think a cat maybe a stray as they have no collar on, which worries me.

That's awful! I assume that this wasn't a safety collar? I wouldn't dream of using a standard collar as cats can get their leg trapped easily, I've found a cat with a non safety collar in exactly the same situation, front leg trapped and in a lot of distress.

Re: Cat collar quandry

Thanks for the links for the collars and for the words of advice.

I'm going to get him another one from my local shop (cheaper than the internet when you add postage). But this time i'm going to get at least one spare - he's such a pickle i just know he will lose more.

Re: Cat collar quandry

I would NEVER put a collar on my cats since seeing some horrendous examples of my clients cats getting caught in theirs! My cats were both microchipped.

The following is a link from the Cat's Protection League on this very subject

Re: Cat collar quandry

Hiya

I get all my collars (and for the kitten packs) here...

They are the breakaway types
very soft
with a bell

She handmakes them! - and you only have to pay postage for one - no matter how many you buy! She has a fair few in the clearance section too in very funky patterns. I also know that if there is a particular patter you like in her small dog collars she will make a cat/kitten collar to order for you in that fabric (no extra cost!).

eBay Store - HotDogsCoolCats: Mini 7-11, X Small 7-11, Teacup 6-8

I think its somewhere like £2.70 for a unique collar and the postage is about £1.80 (like i said that doesnt change whether you buy 1 or 30 collars). I always have a stock of them here as i foster pregnant rescue cats, so new cats get their own collar and the kittens go to their new homes with a kitten pack including a brand new kitten collar!

hth xx

Re: Cat collar quandry

The quick release ones sound really good and I'm sure collars are much safer now than they used to be but years ago (and I'm talking at least 10) my mums cat got its collar caught up on a branch and it basically hung itself. She was utterly heartbroken and has never used one since, neither have I but I do worry that people might think they are strays... Luckily mine don't wander far.
