What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

I have been up to the local cats protection and have offered our home to, two rescued cats.

I had thought about having a cat again for a while! I walked round the cattery looking at all of the soft fluffy kittens and cats of all shapes, sizes and ages? I spoke with the girls who worked there and read the labels trying to see the purfect cat for us!
My only requirement was it had to do dogs as I have my little Ps there was a big black and white tom cat who reminded me of one of the cats that I had when I was a child! Again a little red triangle to warn of potential attacks! I spoke with the girls and they told me that both cats would put up a fight if they had enough and the black and white 4 year old tom was put on happy pills to chill him out!
After stroking both cats without any problems I went home to sleep on it.
I thought I can take home a soft fluffy cuddly cat or kitten or I could give a cat a loving home that it my not have the chance of? I have had many animals from rats and hamsters to horses and dogs and 6 cats! So I am thinking I should leave the kittens and soft fluffy cats to the less experienced owners and I would be doing a better thing to free the long term inmates from their incarceration?

Am I doing the right thing bring these two troubled cats home?

If you feel able to take on a troubled kitty then I would say go for that and as you say. leave the cuddly babies to less experienced people. I am sure you realise all the potential problems with an older cat and would be able to offer a loving home to one that would perhaps not get another chance.
I wish you the very best of luck with your choice which ever you decide to go for.

Hi Jenni
Yes you are - right that is! cats do not ask a lot from us, and to offer a home to one that would be overlooked is a great thing to do - you will reap the pleasures in the end, of knowing that you have provided a good stable home to two less fortunate cats!!

Wheres my wellies by the way????

Re: What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

Thanks for your support and it does feel right to take the real charity cases home.
There is some text missing from my first posting.

There are two cats the black and white tom and a long haired blue eyed tom who also has attitude problems and is house bound because of his deafness?

So to very different cats Rocky the black and white tom is almost a ratter, a farmers cat and the pretty boy house cat?

Both with trust problems, and hints and tips for getting a cat to trust you and each other?

Re: What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

Firstly, a lot of people want the fluffy little kittens, which is why we chose two cats, and secondly black cats are often overlooked, which is why one of our cats is almost all black.

Personally, I think that you are quite right and I hope that your new rescue cats have long and happy years as part of your loving family

Yes Yes & Yes - They maybe troubled and find it difficult initially to join your pack but as you probably know from past expweriences and as İve learnt taking on street cats and dogs there is nothing like the loyality you recieve from a cat or dog thats had a troubled past. Anyone can care for the cute and cuddly. İt takes so much more to give to a damaged individual. Good Luck with your decision and please keep us informed how they settle in.

This is Polar - he is deaf partially sighted and was within hours of death when one of my dogs found him huddled under a bush.

Sorry DT not got anywhere near any shops! I've been saving my pennies for the new pussy cats!

Talking of money does anyone have any great ideas for fundraising as I have also signed up to do some fundraising a the cats protection league?

Bake sales and raffles are ok but its hard to make big money? I'm thinking a thousand pound instead of a couple of hundred! confused:

Re: What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

Oh and thanks for your positive thoughts guys, it is nice to see people are behind me on this!

Any ideas on how to encourage trust from my new feline friends?

And can anyone see any holes in my plan?
Two cats that don't know each other and have attitude problems. The plan is to put Dexter the house cat upstairs in our bedroom top floor, then Rocky the big tom in our livingroom on the middle floor, then the dogs stay downstairs. Keeping all of the animals separate for the first week so building up our bond with them one on one, but still passing the sents around.

This is where I need your help, please!

Then introduce the cats to each other? Maybe for the next week?
OR
Introduce both the dogs to both of the cats?

Which way do you think will be better?

And do I introduce the dogs one at a time so braking down the pack so making them easliy controlled?
The dogs have not really met any cats properly, if a cat runs they will chase but when a cat fluffs up and spits they will turn and run. So I am hope the dogs will learn from a quick slap round the nose will give them some cat respect!

So what do you guys think?

I think I will introduce them to each other when I bring them home, while they are in their carriers.

Re: What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

how ever you indroduce the animals you might like to try rescue remedy for all of them I have used for stray cats for years it has a great de-stressing effect
4 drops each in their water or food or you can put some on their eartips it is a totally harmless flower remedy from Bach remedies which can be found at Boots,Tesco's and just about all heath shops.
students use it before taking examinations for the same reasons

good on you for taking two recue cats look at my signature it was true then and is just as true now.
