Re: What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

for trust building I have found with various animals one very effective way.

1) Shut yourself and animal(s) in a room with a couple places they can hide if they wish

2) Sit on floor with newspaper in front of you

3) Play with some smelly food (Tuna for cats is great) in a plastic tub so you get scraping noise and waft the smell around

4) ignore the animal(s) so they don't feel challenged

5) As soon as you get a positive reaction (they come out of hiding) leave the food and ignore both it and cats, your smell is all over food area

6) Repeat twice a day but hold out for stronger reaction each time, so by day 4 they should be eating from the bowl as you hold it, however sometimes can take longer depending on animal

And for cats... when they have started to relaxe with you in the room then it is time for non-tactile toys, laser pointer, Da Bird, jingly balls are great

hope that helps at all?

Thats brilliant!
I knew that the key is to let the cat come to you and not go to the cat!

Re: What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

I dont' think there is a wrong reason for taking home shelter kitties. unless you intent to stick them in your cooking box or something similar.

I also dunno why people say that black cats are overlooked as they're always the first to go at barks usually, it's unusual/damaged looking cats that tend to be left.

We don't have a preference on what our cats look like, but have ended up with tabbies due to their ability to get on with a cat we already have rather choosing them for their looks. There are cats we would love to have but can't because they were unsuitable or already taken.

Re: What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

Hi,

I've been up to the Cats Protection today to see Rocky and Dexter.

Dexter the long coated cat has had his tummy shaved and he looks funny!

Rocky was asleep on his cushion which I took up for him.

So I hope and guess they like the new furry beds I bought for them both, thought it would be good to get their sent on the beds ready for bringing them home.

Re: What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

Blackwell is an amazing cat. He has beautiful blue eyes and is completely blind. Blackwell has free roam of the social room in Kitten Rescue’s sanctuary, and manages to find his way around the room pretty well all on his own! He is pretty shy, but so sweet. Blackwell was rescued from a Palmdale animal facility that Kitten Rescue has now acquired as its own. He is about 11 years old and may never find an adopter that can provide him the unique attention and environment that he requires.

Re: What's the right reasons for bringing home a rescue cat?

Spend some time with the pet you think you want to adopt. Most shelters have a match up system set in place to attempt to place the right pet with the right family. Make sure to visit the pet more than one time at the shelter to get better acquainted. Often times, love at first sight happens, and people are anxious to take that dog or cat home right away. Once home they may find that the animal does not work well with their family and regret having made a hasty decision.
