Female cat lost without her companion

Hi

We have recently lost one of our cats who was only one yrs old and have found that the other cat seems to have lost her personality and seems quite lost without him. Although from different litters we had them both from kittens so Holly has never been on her own. Should we get her a new friend? Is she more likely to take to a kitten and how long should we leave it before getting another cat? I'm just so worried about upsetting her even more!

Please help, as I too am very lost without Bailey and want to do the best thing possible.

Thanks

Re: Female cat lost without her companion

hmmm sorry the answer to this isnt an easy one! Female cats dont take to new cats very well (in my opinion some others do)

I would get a new cat eventually because even if they dont get on at first they will intime learn to co-habit reasonably and then possibly become affectionat with each other, and if they dont, the cat will still know there is another presence of a cat in the house.

Dont you think its wierd that cats, well house cats, dont really have much proof they arent the only cats in the whole universe.

Re: Female cat lost without her companion

i think it is up to you, if you do get a new cat then i would do it sooner rather than later, the cat you have will adjust in time and if you leave it to long, she will not like her new companion.

if it was me i would go and get new cat, look around and see what is out there, but i would also buy from a person who is willing to help you if your cat will not take to new one.

if you go to a good breeder most will say they will take the kitten back if there is any problems.

i always sell and say at anytime you decide you don't want the cat, i will take them back. but i would have to keep separate from my cats so it would have to be a good reason for them not wanting kitten.

this is just my view and you need to keep in mind what you want and if you can take on anther cat as it is hard work matching cats up.

you also what to make sure new cat is well and has nothing as you don't want to pass on to your cat you have now.

ok i will shut up now lol

Re: Female cat lost without her companion

Sorry to hear you have lost Bailey, I really feel for you. Poor Holly has lost her playmate which is why her personality has changed. I am no expert, but I think the sooner you get another kitty the better for Holly to adjust to a new companion. I am not saying it will be plain sailing, it might take a little while for her to accept the new arrivval. There again she might instantly take to him/her. 4 months ago I introduced our new arrival (Merlin 13 week old male kitten) to Murray (17 year old girl kitty) and Jasper (12 year old male kitty). Jasper took to him instantly and they became playmates, but it took Murray a month to accept him.
Whatever you choose to do good luck and I hope all goes well for you
