What should I ask breeder?

Hi

I have found a pretty silver bengal boy from a breeder but wanted to know if anyone can suggest any questions I should ask the owner? I am very curious why he is only selling his kittens now their 5 months old. Any ideas why he would keep them longer than usual? He also said that he has to be a pet because the snow fathers contract states that all male kittens born from him have to be neutered. That sounded a little odd to me is that normal?

Thanks I would really appreciate any help or suggestions

Emma

Re: What should I ask breeder?

Not a breeder, just a pet owner.

Neutering is a condition set by all ped breeders for kittens bought as pets. There is a thread on here started by SarahChall where there is a very good explanation as to why this is so.

So, yes, asking the boys to be neutered is normal.

As to 5 months - it may be because the kittens didn't sell or potential buyers backed out.

If you are suspicious do some checking - for instance, visit the breeder's website. Check the breeder's registration - do they belong to breeder clubs as well as national association?

Contact the breeder - open up a dialogue. Ask questions. Be forthcoming about yourself too. Maybe ask to go visit. Most breeders wouldn't mind as long as you make an appointment.

Re: What should I ask breeder?

It is quite normal for the stud owner to stipulate that all male kittens must be neutered - it protects the line I guess.
Does this breeder have more than one kitten at 5 months old? If it is just the one it may be that they have been unable to sell him in these difficult times or as Janee says a buyer changed their mind.
Ask how long they have been breeding, how many litters they have had. Make sure that vaccinations, worming and de-fleaing are all up to date. If possible visit the breeder - it is always a good idea if you can to see the kitten in its home environment.
I'm not a breeder yet but hope to start this summer - I would be happy to answer any questions from a potential slave and would welcome visits.
Good luck - I hope this kitten is all you are looking for and you are happy with the breeder

Thank you for all your help. He had just not been sold along with his sister and he has had all his vaccinations, worming, de-fleaing done and upto date.
I am going to pick him up in about a week when I have got everything sorted. Can't wait and thank you again I will post pics of him as soon as he is home

Are you sure he has done this through choice? A lot of us are finding kitten sales slow - I have one right now that is nearly five months and still isn't sold. If he has been waiting this long it could be because they were getting over an infection or it could be that he was thinking of keeping one to show and/or breed from and he couldn't decide which one. Why not ask him?
