Poorly Ivy

Hi all

Ivy is quite poorly and to be honest I'm quite worried about her. She was spayed on Monday and seemed absolutely fine when she got home, she was full of beans and charged round like a loon for ages. She did have a bit of a dry barking cough but we were told this was normal because of the tube down her throat.

By Wednesday she seemed to be well over everything, we took her for a post op check up, the vet was very happy but gave us some antibiotic tablets for her throat. But yesterday her cough seemed a bit phlegmy and sounded like she had a frog in her throat, she kept making little coughing noises like we do when we have a cold. But DH was late to work yesterday morning and said she was playing the same as normal.

I phoned the vets anyway cos of her cough and had an appointment last night. By the time I got home from work she also seemed to be limping on her left back leg, the side of her wound from the spaying, and she hadn't eaten anything all day.

I took her to the vets and we found she had a high temperature (103.5 degrees), she did have a 'wet' sounding throat and her wound seemed quite tender and inflammed. She was given anti-inflammatory and long lasting antibiotic jabs. I had cooked her a chicken breast so she had a little of that when we got home then slept solidly for 2 hours. She then had an absolutley mad 2 hours which cheered me up a little, she seemed almost normal. She slept really well and i was quite encouraged. But today she seems to have gone backwards. All she's eaten all day is about 3 mouthfuls of her fave food and about 1/4 of a chicken breast. She has slept ALL day, the only time she's moved is to change her sleeping place. She normally follows me round the house and she hasn't done this once. She hasn't used her litter tray at all (but she's not eating or drinking so not hugely surprised) either.

I am supposed to be going out for the day tomorrow but I'm really worried about leaving her on her own all day. I don't know whether to phone the vets again or to wait and see if the drugs are just taking a while to kick in.

Any advice you might be able to give would be gratefully received.

Thanks
Sally
(sorry for the essay!!!)

Re: Poorly Ivy

you need to get her to the vets now, and i mean now, i had a cat who had a temp of 103 she had a two injection anti-inflammatory and antibiotic and was told she would pick up, she did for that night running around like mad, the next day she had gone down hill again, i did not hesitate i rang vets got her there, they had to take her in as she was not drinking or eating, if i had not got her there she would not have survived as she had a nasty infection, so please get your cat to a vet or ring and ask them for advice and state the cat has not eaten or drunk anything,or had a wee or poo all day, also i would of popped her in a enclosed area after finding out her scare was tender and maybe infected, for her safety but not to worry, please take this advice and see a vet.

Re: Poorly Ivy

Ring your vet, there should be someone on the end of the line who you can talk to and describe what you've written about in your post. They don't charge for phonecalls and should be able to help you decide what needs doing.

Re: Poorly Ivy

Bluechip, thank you so much....you scared the hell out of me but I did exactly as you said and I've just got back from the vets having left Ivy there.
Her temperature last night was 103.5 and tonight it was 104.2, the vet said its verging on life threatening. This isn't good as its normally the Metacam jab that they give them to bring their temp down and thats what she had last night so its obviously something a lot worse than they thought.

It would seem they are quite worried about her, they've taken her in and are going to put her on IV antib's and fluids, something to loosen the phlegm in her throat and some pain relief. She's going to look like a pin cushion when she comes home!

The vet said she'd call me during the night if anything major happened but otherwise I'm going to call in the morning to make sure things are ok. The initial plan is to have her on the IV for 24 hours so it looks like I'm not going to see her until tomorrow night at the earliest. I cried all the way home....we took her in to make her life a lot better and now she's back where she started, I feel horrible.

But thank you again for your prompt reply, you possibly just saved my kitten x

Re: Poorly Ivy

Thanks Spid, we've only had Ivy 2 months but this website has been a lifeline for us, you've all made me feel so welcome and your extensive knowledge on absolutely everything can't be beaten!

I'll post tomorrow after I've phoned the vets to let you know how things are going. Hope she's better by next Saturday, thats when we pick Baxter up!

Re: Poorly Ivy

How scary for you. You don't expect something like that to happen after having a routine op done.

I hope your snuggle muffin makes a complete recovery and you can soon have her home and give her loads of special cuddles and yummy food.

Thinking of you both and sending loads of healing thoughts xx
