Feeding other cats

Reading some of the posts from people who's cats are like Six Dinner Sid.

This has really made me think about things. I feed neighbours cats too as they sit in my garden for 24/7 sometimes until I give them something and then they go away for a bit. However I NEVER let them in, but when I was a child a cat sat in my next door neighbours garden and my mum and my neighbour kept shooeing it away from our own cats food, it was a skinny hungry cat and eventually it STARVED to death in my neighbours garden. I was only about 7 att but it has always haunted me, and is perhaps one of the reasons I cannot stop myself from giving the cats something. The ones I feed don't come in my house and they DO go home, but they are rarely cared for properly as their owner is quite ill at times and has been known not to get out of bed for 4 5 days at a time.
I'm really in a dilemma now. Reading how upset you are at people feeding your cats, What should I do???

When it snowed they sat freezing for two days, while I tried to ignore them, eventually I took out a large insulated box for them to huddle into and they did. They were not let in once. They are not even called in on Bonfire nights either.

I dunno what's the right thing to do now?

Re: Feeding other cats

That's easy....ask the neighbour!
It could be that they are really too ill to cope with the cats anymore and would appreciate some help - either with re-homing them or just feeding them. (you may find they will chip into the cost as well, it must be costing you a fortune!), it could be that they may need the decision to be taken away from them - obviously the cats welfare is the main concern here.
Good Luck

Re: Feeding other cats

They know I feed their cats. I convinced them to neuter the cats eventually. They have one cat they keep indoors. They were being over run with kittens at one point. I did mention re-homing too but they always just say everything is ok. The other day they saw one trying to get in my front door and they called him away, I said oh it's ok, I wont let him in. They told me they weren't letting him in either as he had pooed indoors and they didn't wanna have to clean it up again??
I'm just looking out for the cats really!

Re: Feeding other cats

mmm...well in that case - I guess the best you can do (as you seem prepared to) is to feed them - but don't let them in, I guess if it gets too bad, you could get the RSPCA involved, but obviously that is a pretty extreme thing to have to do.
I guess it just goes to show not all cat lovers make good owners.
Poor pusscats.

Re: Feeding other cats

I think they are ok, they do like the outside, and I wouldn't let them suffer. They catch alot of rodents too and bring them to my yard. lol They are eating at home too, just outdoors I think, they are certainly not underweight, and I do not give them enough to be as big as they are, I think it's just a joint feeding operation really.
I think it's ok. The cats are ok!

Re: Feeding other cats

I think as long as people respect each other there shouldn't be a problem. If your neightbour seems ok with it then by all means carry on. It is when the neighbour doesn't listen to the owner - that is when it gets annoying I should think.

Exactly.

I would say that you are doing the right thing at the moment for those cats.

I know it is not easy to find out who owns a cat, but there are strategies like fixing note to collar, if there is one.

Re: Feeding other cats

i think it is okay in this case as the owners know and don't mind - the problems come when the owners DO mind and aren't taken notice of. You are doing well - congrats on getting them to neuter too.

Re: Feeding other cats

It took a few litters to get them to do it. Some 15 or so kittens just from that one household, and one litter died in the woods, as we never found where she had them? Anyway, they are at least done now.

Re: Feeding other cats

some people infuriate me. When I lived with my parents we had neighbours who had three cats. Two of them were female and not spayed and before long our street was over run with boy cats. We came home one day in the car and there were loads of cats mating in the street!
I got out of the car and was making my way to the door when I noticed my neighbour standing there watching he laughed and said, "why do they always come after my cat?" grrr!
